Turco to Philly Discussion

MOD EDIT:

Philly.com:

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/f...to_Philly.html

Quote:
NEWARK, N.J. – Before a flake of snow could accumulate on the ground in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, the internet was brimming with a flurry of Flyers rumors.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t about Ray Emery and his injury concerns.

Rather, it was about another goaltender: the Dallas Stars’ Marty Turco, who quickly became a trending topic on Twitter.

Turco officially became expendable by the Stars on Tuesday when they acquired Kari Lehtonen from Atlanta for defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy and a 4th round pick. The deal was finalized late Tuesday night.

Turco’s name, though, has been connected with the Flyers in the rumor mill for weeks.

Rogers Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos was the first to report on Tuesday that the Flyers are at the top of the list for Turco, helping fuel the frenzy.

That potential move could be interesting, given Ray Emery’s current health situation and Michael Leighton’s experience in the NHL playoffs – coupled with the fact that Turco will be an unrestricted free agent come July 1.
Nick Kypreos...

Dallas/Atlanta still waiting for trade call to complete Kari Lehtonen deal. Dallas/ Philly talks ongoing for Marty Turco.
Mentioned on Yahoo.com:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puc...urn=nhl,218628

Quote:
Is it a gamble? Sure, but what's the alternative? Let Turco skate for nothing after floundering away a playoff seed? Leave the goaltending situation a major question mark heading into the summer and having bidding wars against rivals? Lehtonen's RFA status means there's a proven, affordable NHL starter as an option on a post-Turco team. Health is a concern, for sure; but it's better than fighting 10 other teams to offer $7 million per season to Evgeni Nabokov(notes).

We'll follow this story as it becomes official and if the other skate drops on Turco this evening. Follow Defending Big D for updates as well. Meanwhile, wrap your brains around Marty Turco playing for, and in front of, Flyers fans.

UPDATE: Those Turco rumors will have to sit still for now as Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk(notes) tells Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News that for the moment, the team will carry three goaltenders.
Plus Briere has a NTC and would be serious overpayment imo.

This for sure.

I highly doubt that Briere would want to move to Dallas

I like Briere and, in a cap free world, I want him on this team. But if they could move his contract for an expiring one... I think I pull the trigger. That way, they still have options in the offseason to explore Price, Halak, or any of the other young goalies. Though it would be painful to lose Briere and then have to trade another top-6 to land yet another goalie.

Edit: Also, Turco sucks.

I'd rather keep Briere.

You know, after thinking for a couple mins, Holmgren might be dumb enough to do this.

EDIT: If this is a way to get out from under Hartnell's deal and sign someone new in the summer (Biron/Mason), I would cautiously endorse this actually, but I doubt Holmgren is that smart.

I'd do backflips if he traded Briere for an expiring contract. Too good to be true.

Turco is an upgrade in our net and if we can get rid of a big contract, we HAVE to make the deal. Like Val said, if no cap I would LOVE to keep DAnny B, but he may have to go.

Turco does have a .910 this year.

If this trade happens, I'll probably talk myself into it, McKenzie does think we'd be the only realistic destination for him.

If it's a way to get rid of a bad deal, then it's smart, otherwise, no thanks.

"What I am told is that Turco is NOT coming to Philadlephia, and the Lightning are not involved either as has been rumored."
-Eklund

Judging Eklund's excellent track record.. it looks like Turco will be skating during Flyer's warm-ups tomorrow night in Newark.

What is your def of a bad deal, Briere or Harts ? As a team I would love to rid ourselves of Harts, but if we can get rid of the 6.5 NMC contract, we have too, even though I love the cookie monster

That's not going to happen. Briere won't play in Dal.
