February 23, 2010 update, post #84 (Emery out for 3 weeks, Feb. 11, 2010)

Quote:
The never ending saga of Ray Emery’s left hip took another twist on Thursday afternoon when the Flyers announced they’re putting the goalie on the shelf for a while.

As a precautionary measure.

General manager Paul Holmgren said Emery would miss three weeks of on-ice activity. Of course, two of them, are during the Olympic break, so it’s not like Emery is missing actual NHL games.

“Based on what doctors have told us, we are just going to shut Ray down here for about three weeks and give him some time to rehabilitate the hip and then we will go from there,” Holmgren said.

Emery can continue to do cardio workouts and rehab to strengthen the hip, Holmgren said, but no more.

“It is about 16 days where we are not playing games,” Holmgren said. “I would assume that we would have a better idea how Ray is progressing. I feel good about what we are doing with Ray. Based on the information we have right now I think it is the right way to go for both the Flyers and for Ray.”

The larger issue remains: Given his injuries, how can the Flyers possibly consider Emery to be their No. 1 going into the stretch run for the playoffs?

So he's going to miss very few to no games. Fine with me. Let him rest.

All he's missing is a Montreal home and home.

I'm okay with that.

Yeah, it seems like they are trying to avoid the inevitable.

Me either, but Homer's eyes just lit up because Emery's injury plagued season means he can re-sign him on the cheap again.

I'm game for an Emery discount.

I hope he's healthy enough to play in the postseason though.

Only thing that worries me is the bacik to back games vs the Habs. Either Leighton gets 2 stright, or Boucher gets 1. Either way it's scary

If he really has a torn labrum then he isn't going to be healthy until the surgery.

Oh Please, the habs suck lately I would be happy if we split them and no other Hab got injured.

IMO the Flyers still need to Upgrade thier goalie to have a real shot in the postseason. Assuming they make it in.

If the Flyers can get 1 win out of the series i'll be happy, i'm sick of seeing them lose to a garbage Montreal team every time they play during the regular season.

If Leighton continues to play well (although he was shaky last night), they should continue to let him play. If he loses a few bad games, switch him out, but as long as he's playing well he should continue to play.

On a separate note This medical and training staff are an issue. They all need to be replaced. I dont know what the training regiman is but so many hip, groin, labrum problems. New players come in and get simliar injuires to guys already here.

Emery is done. The 3 week is lip service for now. They can sya what they want but this isrelated to his previous injury imo. Came back too early.

Im scared he may be done too. It seems like they are making it seem that he will be back so GM's don't take advantage if we are shopping for a goalie. I may be wrong, but I just have a feeling.

I hope I'm wrong and he will be totally healthy in 3 weeks.

Yeah, weren't we told something like "there's absolutely nothing wrong with him."

More proof that you never a believe a word that comes out of the mouth of someone who gets their paycheck from the Flyers.

Put Emery on LTIR through the Olympics and save on his cap hit during that time, and make it retroactive to last Wednesday. That should put him until the end of the break.

So basically he won't be able to play during the Olympics that he's not playing in. That's fine.

Probably a good thing they shut him down. Let's see where he's at after the Olympic break.

No, sounds like he isn't practicing and won't be on the ice.

So then he needs to be practicing again before he plays.

It says 3 weeks, but it will be more like 4-5.

One reason I'm as skeptical as some of the others in this thread is that they are *still* refusing to release the results of the MRI.

I've been saying this for awhile. The Flyers medical and training staff are the worst in professional hockey. They killed John LeClair's career after he had his back operated on (not sure if anyone remembers, but while he was under the care of the Flyers medical professionals, they allowed a staph infection to get so bad that he nearly lost the ability to walk). Randy Jones, Simon Gagne, Ryan Parent, Braydon Coburn, Antero Niittymaki, Robert Esche have all had hip surgeries in which it took them a long time to recover or they were never the same player after the surgeries. They nearly destroyed Briere's groin and abdomen, they misdiagnosed Gagne's concussion from the 07-08 season as "dehydration" and they held off on Parent's back surgery and when they finally committed to the back surgery, they said the recovery time was only six to eight weeks. However, David Bolland in Chicago had the exact same surgery and he was sidelined for 13 weeks and 1 day.

They need to be fired. I understand that teams are going to suffer injuries and such, but this is beyond ridiculous now. Eventually, Emery is going to need surgery on his hip. At some point, there has to be a breaking point.
