Name one move Sather has made since the lockout that even somewhat resembled a rebuilding move. On what basis do you see him trading Shelley anywhere?
We have been serious playoff contenders EVERY year since the lockout. How could he rebuild through the trade deadline. But if i had to name one, trading up to get Staal or trading neimenen for a 3rd,
At first I was psyched to have gotten Shelley. But having read all the posts, and having finally begun to understand the irreplaceability and intrinsic value of late round picks I've become horrified by this acquisition. We should have just called up Jeff Bloemberg instead.
People aren't upset that Sather invested a late-round pick next season. People are upset, that Sather has made yet another questionable move that isn't going to make a difference. Shelley is not going to protect Gabby, nor Lundqvist. He's not a magical force shield that Torts can sprinkle on our better players. The rate of ice-time our 4th line gets, means we'll be seeing a lot of 4th line vs 4th line scraps. That's not team toughness. That doesn't address our issues. Sather has proved, yet again, that his priority's are all wrong. That's why people are complaining.
well if Sather can turn around and send Brashear and/or Voros out for 6th rounder, Brashear/Voros for Shelley (UFA2b) who would object to that? If he can get better than a 6th rounder we'll be doing 180s and calling him a genius.
This trade is 100% setting up a bigger deal. Voros is going to be traded and who knows who else. This is a vet who doesn't hurt you in the room and is tough lets see where the chips fall.

i for one would not be calling Sather a genius if were to pull off the above mentioned move...why? BECAUSE HE'S THE MORON THAT OVERPAID TO BRING THEM HERE IN THE EFFING FIRST PLACE!...ahhh ok i feel better now.
That being said, i recognize the absolute necessity of NHL teams having a "goon," "enforcer," or whatever you want to call it, on their roster.
With all the other garbage we've had to put up with this year, I am tired of seeing Rangers getting the crap beat out of them in fight after fight. Have we won a single fight all year?
Brandon Prust is a willing lightweight and though he will, he can't realistically take on the big boys.
A 6th round pick is no great loss.
Next time we play the Flyers and with Shelley and Prust in the lineup, guaranteed nobody will be taking liberties with Gaborik.
Like I said, getting rid of fighting forever would make me happy but until then, we need a guy who can fight.
I remember people pleased with the Brashear signing too... Look where it lead us? A "normal" team shouldn't have wait that long to solve that issue. I just hope Brashear out and Shelley in will light some fire under some players *****. No more excuses, we have two games ahead us, no more excuses... No more "we have to play harder", just ****ing do it... I'm very sceptical with that move atm, the jury is still out, let see how harder we play tonight and Sunday.
Sather should hire a asst Gm to run the draft and sign FA. Sather is a great GM when it comes to making trades he has won way more then he lost but his FA track record sucks. Shelley is capable fighter (not great Orr was a fluke) a solider that knows his role and when to do it. Voros is someone Fla could use and trade able. brashear is going to be gone and saving us cap space.

what a stupid argument. so if sather traded dubi and rosie and got a goal scorer back, then made this trade, you would like it more?
2011 draft is week, and he is a UFA after this year so I really don't care either way, he's just another rental in my books, after 20 games we'll forget he was ever hear, unless he re-ups for a 5yr, 60 mill deal with a full NTC.

Calm down!! This isn't a blockbuster deal that's shipping away our future. Shelley is a presence we need to protect Hank who has been getting run all year with no retaliation by our chicken defense. Frankly, I would have traded Girardi straight up for Shelley after his embarassing do nothing attitude while Gabby was taking on the Philly goon but, then again, that's why I'm just a fan and not a GM.
Given the fact we can't win games, let's win some fights.
Not to mention the Flyers players are capable of taking regular shifts without being TOTAL liabilities.
It's less the concept of Team Toughness and more to do with GM SUCKNESS is why fans are bitter. Just more nonsense lateral trades that get us NOWHERE WHEN COMPARED TO EVERYONE ELSE. Whether we have the softest and least productive "Tough guys" in the league by a lot or a little we still are in the cellar compared to what everyone else has....We need to direct our attention ELSEWHERE and I'm not talking about the Maloney Brothers +JD swaping worthless 3rd and 4th liners back and forth at the deadline.....comical

This move, and whats going on with Brashear is all on Sather. Well, maybe a bit on Torts too for not being a big fan of Orr. Either way, today is about Sather. He runs the show. He's the guy that came up with the Brashear idea LESS THAN A YEAR IN he's left scrambling to make his mistake go away. We say that alot around here don't we?
Why is everyone so upset... Shelly is a damn good player. Gotta give Slats credit here. That was a steal of a trade for the Rangers. I think if he plays well and wins a few fights Im all for signing him to like a 7 year deal for like 56 mil.
I felt there would have been more deals but I guess this was like jr prom lots of feelers but no one closed the deal.
Florida put out who and what they want from all interested teams and now have 2 weeks to try and tweak the deals. Not sure 100% it will get done but trust me the Rangers are in on it
