50 stitches for Del Zotto (UPDATE: won't play against Tampa)

Quote:
Del Zotto, still clutching at his left rib cage which was heavily wrapped, said “I’ll see how I feel tomorrow. Right now, I don’t feel too good.” He needed 50 stitches total, 12 to close the internal wound and the the rest to sew up the gash. Evgeni Malkin’s skate cut right through his jersey and Del Zotto certain fretted about how close it came to his heart.

“I thought maybe my ribs were bruised at first but I thought I’d take a check with my hand and I saw blood,” Del Zotto said. “I tried not to look at it. Apparently it was pretty gross. There was a lot of gauze, a lot of blood. I don’t feel good. It’s not one of my better days.”

Jeez, this could have been really ugly, the Olympic break can't come faster. Since there are still game played until Sunday, I presume the waivers wire is still on despite the roster freeze?

Wow. Get well soon Michael. Guy is 19 years old and will likely miss a game after 50 stitches? Super tough :]

Ahh how I miss being 19 and having that feeling of invincibility. 50 stitches is a nice size gash and to even think of playing seems foolish based on where the injury is and how often that area gets hit in the course of a game. Seems there would be a high risk of the stitches getting ripped open.

jeez that's scary

if the skate went in a little deeper and hit his heart.. he'd be dead right now.

the NHL certainly does need to look at it's equipment. No player should be suffering a cut by a skate going thru their ribcage. That could easily result in a collapsed lung / death

Hopefully he's benched for the next game.

Absolutely no reason to take a risk this close to the break.

Oh, and putting gabby into today's lineup was a really dumb move.

The guy could barely go up a 6 inch step. What the hell made them think he could play a good shift? If anything a player with a leg injury is a pure liability on the ice. They're not going to be able to skate properly.

If I were coaching I wouldn't want to have a player on the ice who's more concerned about not ripping out stitches then playing the game. All that was accomplished by putting him in the lineup was putting us down 1 forward for most of the game, and having a 7th defenseman like we did last game sure would've been nice this one...

He plays 4 minutes, then has to leave because his leg doesn't feel good.. was anyone really surprised? I don't understand how they didn't see this coming from the beginning..

so for the love of god.. if a player's injured, scratch them! At least we got joker who can QB the PP now so it's not like we're totally screwed without DZ

Sounds horrifying the way he describes it. However, I guess if our important offensive players are going to get hurt, this is the best time.

Crazy. Seriously, if I were him I would be sitting out the remainder of the season. But you know Tortorella is going to have him out there the first game after the Olympics

I would rather see Snags come up and play then Potter or Beer. At least give him a game where he could run the Power Play and see what he can do.

well, i am glad he is okay and hope he rests it up and gets better!! I haven't seen any of the new jerseys in real life yet so I don't know how thin they are, but that seems to be a problem, I have never liked this new rbk jerseys! so maybe this will cause the NHL to switch back to the regular jerseys

Wow, 50 stitches. Had no idea how bad it was just from watching the video. Hope Torts doesn't go full retard and play the kid like he did with Gabs last night. I'm still baffled by that move...

DZ won't play until March. You can't have awound that close to the heart & come back & play.

As for Gabs playing last night, that was a Gabs decsion. It showed real leadership on his part & even if Torts & Gabs knew ahead of time he wouldn't finish the game him being there & not being there sparked the team. Look at the game Drury had, the whole team minus Girardi played an excellent game.

I think that was more Gab's decision than Torts, but of course he has the final say. if your best player says he can and wants to play, how can you say no?

Easily, that is why he is Head Coach. To not only make the tough decisions but the correct decisions.

50 stitches? Wow. Give him a few weeks off at home and take it from there.

Nothing freak about it. Look around pro hockey, these skate incidents are happening more often every year. The game has changed, its a pinball machine on ice. Zednik had his throat slashed. Pat Dapuzzo took a skate to the face and broke his nose plus 60 stitches. Two years ago Shanahan and Knuble just accidently skated into each other, Shanny was never the same again. Unavoidable accidents in todays game, someones gonna get seriously hurt or killed one of these days.

They shouldn't take the chance. Give Potter some minutes and let's see MDZ after the break.
