so I went to watch the opening Ceremonies with some Canadian friends at a bar here in Toronto...let me just say that by the end of it they were all horribly embarrassed by the opening ceremonies. Was that the general consensus by the people here, that it was pretty bad? I thought it was kind of lame....

Our suggestions as to how to make it more entertaining:

1) William Shatner lights the torch.

2) To represent Toronto, the skaters who were skating around the rink should have all run into each other, thus representing the massive pileups on the 401

3) Harper prorogues the ceremonies half-way through because he didn't want to have to deal with this **** anymore.

4) Jack Layton caries one of the torches, and is promptly tackled by Harper's secret service.

5) When the native tribes came out, the mounties showed up to shew them away; a big rug is rolled out and they are swept under it.

Thus you would have authentically Canadian ceremonies!

I'm not a luger, just driven fast road courses in a formula mazda so I can't speak with authority about the tops of walls. That said, I would think skidding down the track is preferable to flying off it. As they used to say when I raced, its not the speed that hurts. It's the stop. So if raising a wall helps keep people on the track, then that would make sense to me.

BTW - I noticed they did exactly what I was suggesting and lowered the start gate to the womans start.

I went to watch the opening at a bar with a bunch of friends. We were all really psyched about it. It was flat out boring.too long and just didn't look professional especially for something as big as the olympics.

All the girls loved those giant totums, They looked like giant dildoes.

Sydney and Beijing was awesome. This one was a dissapointment.

NBC commentary indicated they could not "top" Beijing, so instead tried for a "more intimate" presentation.

what teams do you guys think will medal in ice hockey.. I'm assuming everyone thinks Canada and Russia will be on the podium. But what team do you think will be with them? USA, Sweeden, Czech, Slovakia or some other that i missed?

I wanna say US, but I really don't see any clutchiness on their roster. Don't really see a guy that can change the momentum.

I'd say Russia... Babcock is awesome but I dunno if he can make the 'roster' play like a 'team'.

Women's hockey: US, Canada and perhaps Sweden

Men's hockey: the favorites are Russian, Canada, Sweden

You don't like Lundqvist?

Pavelski is not clutch... yet. Don't you watch the playoffs? We need secondary scoring, remember?

Yeah I do like Lundqvist but they don't have much depth after him.

Everyone was bad last playoffs! don't you remember Pav's OT goal against dallas 2 years ago? That's how he got the nickname 'money' isn't it?

I dunno man. He had a good 07-08 playoff round, but he sucked in the other two. 1 assist in 6 games i unacceptable.

And still, Pavelski is not that type of player - he is not Kovalchuk, he is not Franzen who can just change the momentum... hell, he is not even like Max Talbot.

Pavelski's problem is his strength. He doesn't know that standing in front of the net and blocking shots can get him hurt. In both the playoffs you cite, he had a broken foot from blocking a shot that required off-season surgery. That has been the knock on Pavs is that he is injury prone.

Holy hell, Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer looks like Crosby's illegitimate twin brother.

go grab a Pavs avatar for the duration of the olympics. It's a chance to rep players that you couldn't get in the draft since claims are irrelevant.

Twitter feed for Olympic Hockey.

O.M.G..... Perhaps I should be watching the Canadian women's game rather than taping it (and watching the Sharks/Sabres).

Just tied Olympic record for most goals in period.

After consulting with Led Zappa, I've added a medals table to the 1st post. It will track the top 5 nations in medal count as well as Canada and the US separately whenever they are out of the top 5. Either he or I should update it fairly regularly, even if it's just once or twice a day.

Shouldn't we put Armenia on there too? Just in case they drop below the top 5?
