Regarding Shelley's ice time, remember that he was going to be getting less and less in the last 20 games. The team wants to constitute more stable 3rd and 4th lines and an enforcer is not going to be part of the equation. And in NY, its hard to say what they will do. This was one game for which Shelley had exactly one practice to understand his linemates, responsibilities, and for the coach to understand what Shelley can do on the ice. Torts has already been quoted as saying he has not seen much of Shelley. So its hard to say one game in NY means DW is a liar .... its a pretty strong accusation - and not provable since Shelley could have been benched for the rest of the season here. So even 2-5 minutes a game there is arguably better for him.
WS,
It isn't just that. With the cap issues that the Sharks are heading towards, the luxury of an additional $200k over minimum for an enforcer, even if he is better than other enforcers, is a luxury that the Sharks won't be able to afford. They already got Leach for defense to address overspending in other areas and that is roughly a $200k difference. DW could very well have been doing Shelley a favor, sending him to a team that might pay for his services next year. All of the over-minimum enforcers leaguewide are in danger of being cut or have been. Sending him to NY may be giving him an opportunity for an audition with a team that will pick him up for next year.

Sounds like if anything, the gradual elimination of pure enforcers in the NHL will be a result of the cap more so than rule changes, public sentiment, or media outcry.

DW made a good trade. That's the bottom line. He's a pending UFA and wouldn't be here next year anyway. DW trading him to NY doesn't up or down his chances of finding a new suitor. Now his play will. But that's up to Jody, not DW.

I don't mind seeing teams without pure enforcers. But I don't believe that we'll see a complete wipe out. We'll just see younger guys with smaller cap hits filling those roles.
