Being named to Olympic team

I cannot think of someone specifically off the top of my head who is on an Olympic team and the trading block, but generally does being named to a team add trade value? Furthermore, does having a strong Olmpic performance add value? I was very impressed by Streit and Hiller against Canada today.

I think having a strong Olympics can benefit you. If you're playing great against top teams and doing great I think that's beneficial to trade value.

In addition, I don't think being named to a team is that big of a deal. For the top teams (Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden etc), those players are usually the best players on their respective teams so they don't get traded often if at all. But being on a team like Latvia or something (Grabovski was on Belarus before injury), probably doesn't mean as much.

How much for Getzlaf??

But did his being named add trade value?
think for some teams it does. Like the bottom half of USA where there was a bunch of relatively equal forwards. Or on teams that have a strong first and second line, but not much depth. I also think that a goalie can benefit valuewise if they're on a team that is weak and they carry the team. Hiller so far this year.

i dont think hiller's value was raised from being named to the olympics.. sure his play can increase his value but not being named to the roster..

He did score.
But thank you for finding an nonexample. Besides, I said add value. Starting with negative value and adding some value keeps the value negative.

I meant Hagman when I said his. Sorry for being unclear.
I agree Hiller's value didn't go up by being named. Unless you view it as a process, but that's another matter.

Columbus has 2 impending free agents playing in the Olympics:
Milan Jurcina (Slovakia)
Frederick Modin (Sweden).

Plus I'm sure Fedor Tyutin (Russia) could be had if given a good offer for him.

If Halak continues to play like he has, and gets Slovakia into a medal game, you have to imagine that his value will sky rocket...

question is wether or not the habs would still be willing to trade him...?

Ole-Kristian Tollefsen plays for Norway. I doubt his trade value will ever change.

Really? Hmmm... I'd love him on the Canes. What are the BJs looking for in general?

I think that merely getting named doesn't have much of an impact on a player's value. NHL teams have a ton of information on players around the league. I highly doubt that a GM is going to value the opinion of Finland's (or any other country's) hockey committee when it comes to evaluating players more than the opinions of his own scouts.

An example would be Sami Salo. He's been in the league for a while now, so GM's know exactly what he could bring to a team. The fact that he got named to Finland's team this year doesn't really change his value at all. It only means that whoever was in charge of naming the Finnish hockey team believed that Salo was a better fit than the other eligible defenceman they had to choose from. You could make similar arguments for most players named to their Olympic squads: Bergeron, Seabrook, Tyutin, Afinogenov, J. Ruutu, Komisarek, etc. Being named to their national squad would have no impact on their value.

Now, if someone performs very well on a stage as big as the Olympics, that most definitely would catch the eye of scouts and GMs and would surely increase a player's value. I guess the opposite is true as well.

Seidenberg plays for Germany and Vokoun plays for the Czech Republic.

Yeah, he is the one guy that I can think of that might see his value go crazy if he pulled that off.

Salei is Belarus's captain. Give Colorado a 1st round pick for him.

Except that there really was no-one else to choose from, Finland is catastrophically shallow in D

I'm not sure that being named to the team would do much, but it certainly can create an opportunity to showcase yourself, much like the WJC.

I think a great example would be Roman Polak. He plays with Barret Jackman on the Blues, and is playing with Tomas Kaberle in the Olympics. Being paired with an offensive defensemen should allow Roman to showcase his stay at home abilities better than being paired with Jackman.

Last thing we need is another expensive contract at a position other than winger.

I still have loyalty for the guy, but nope.
