Yes I meant choosing coming over staying, Yes I was talking about the CHL, and the reason why I didnt read the last five posts was because last night I couldnt find this thread so I started a new one which was obviously merged into the official thread.

Any recent news, updates etc? Stats-wise Rajala seems to be getting more and more into the North American game. Currently 30 points in 27 games, including 14 goals (tied 2nd in his team). Has his overall game also improved?

I saw that game. Both goals were VERY impressive.

Damn Oilers are starting to make me worry now..

That would be the WJC for Team Finland right there... Hope it's something minor. With Pulkkinen and Donskoi already out due to injuries and Haula left out for some other reason, we can't lose more top forwards.

Huh, thanks for the info. Was really worried because he will play such an important part for Finland's WJC team.

From the messageboard of ilves.com:

Quote:
Translation: "Might as well mention in this thread as well that you can forget about placing Rajala in potential lines for next season. Toni himself said that he's coming back to Finland next season but not to Tampere Ilves if the current coach is still there."

Good for him, though a bit confused by the coach situation. Elaborate please?

Current coach is Heikki Mälkiä. Ilves are last place in the league and playing piss poor. Mälkiä's style of hockey is very "un-ilves like", coupled with the poor results, fans have been wanting to get of rid him for a long time.

As for why Rajala wants to return to Finland, a lot of people think he's regressed in the CHL. E.g. coach of the U-20 team Hannu Jortikka said in his post tournament blog at a website that in his opionion Rajala made the wrong choice. "It seems while working on improving his weaknesses, they forgot to work on his strengths (ie. skating)."

Wouldn't his reasoning be his mandatory military conscription? I thought I remember reading at the start of the year he'd only likely be in the CHL for a year then would be back for the military thing.

From what I've heard he is playing very well. I don't know what you think the calibur of the WHL is, but averaging over a point per game is very good for an 18 year old.

BTW, why did you have to make a whole new thread to ask this? There are other threads about him already...

Had to bump this thread.

Rajala had 3 goals and 2 assists tonight, and has surpassed Kevin Connauton to have the highest PPG among WHL rookies. He's also a +28, but his team is loaded.

He isn't playing with Schenn or Glennie or anything like that either. Fehr and Lewadniuk (really good players, still), who both had 4 point games as well.

23-32-55 +28 in 50GP.

I talked to a Wheat Kings fan the other day who was really impressed with him lately. He's been much better since finding consistent line-mates.

Rajala is an intriguening prospect in the sense that he probably wont be playing for the oilers for a long time. It'll be interesting to see how he develops as a player over the next few years. I have no problem with him going back to Finland for a season if he wants to. Hopefully he'll look at coming back to NA though.
