What gear will get you "chirped" at? (Besides a tinted visor)

What gear will get you "chirped" at? (Besides a tinted visor)

After reading the tinted visor thread on the home page I was wondering what other type of gear would result in players chirping at you out on the ice.

I've posted a few other threads and like I have said I'm a total newbie and will purchasing all the necessary equipment in the coming months. (I hope) So I was wondering what sorts of things would end up getting me clowned out there on the ice.

I came through high school playing a ton of football and basketball so I'm obviously tough enought to handle it out there but I would certainly like to avoid it as much as possible until I become skilled enough to not look like a complete fool out there.

Anyway, I thought this could be informative and result in some funny conversation.

Given how fast things are happening on the ice, and I speak from my vast experience of having played one whole time, I'd get that unless you were wearing a jersey and pants that are pink with purple polka dots, noone will notice...

Oh my..... It's a very long list.

Tinted visors
M11 bucket
8500 bucket
1500 bucket
True vision cage
Three point visor
Colored laces
Colored blade tape
Ripped socks
Not matching
Low end gear
Mouth guard hanging from your cage
Neck guard (sometimes)

List goes on, but this is what comes to mind.

Why do those particular helmets and cage result in you getting chirped? Also, what's the deal with the 3 point visor?

Because they look terrible. Plus, the 8500 looks like a space helmet.

Was just going to ask this... I'm new to hockey but I can understand the other stuff, but was perplexed with the helmets...

You won't really get chirped unless you try to go out of your way to look 'unique'

Some no nos though I guess would be:
-tinted visor
-mouthguard hanging out
-black painted stick (kane and gagner style)
-tucked in jersey
-arrogant number (99,87,68 etc.)
-tongues bent out

Top end stick with cement hands, top end skates with a flat tire.

Nicknames on sweater

Certain numbers

wheel bags (unless you are a goalie/lady/handicapped)

Anisimov's list is decent

oh.....those half birdie half fishbowl things and like the guy above said flop

Why is tucking in a jersey grounds for being chirped? I've tucked in my jersey on the left side since I began playing and have never had anyone say anything to me about it. I've also never seen anyone on my team/opposing teams be chirped because of it.

And by tongues bent out, do you mean just not tucked in under socks/shin pads? Or those people that like tape them down onto the top of the skate so you can't see the laces?

My list:

- Tinted visor
- Lime green laces
- Non matching equipment (like black helmet, green jersey, blue gloves)
- Any tape colour other than black or white
- Arrogant numbers
- Fishbowl cages (similarly, half metal/half plastic cages)
- Using obscene amounts of tape around your ankles

My guess is he thinks the design looks stupid. I think it looks cool and unique, but I can definitely see why some people may think otherwise.

Do you play with the Prince of Dubai or something? Not matching? Low end gear? Cages? Jesus man.

While it does look a bit foolish in my opinion, the real reason is that people seem to hate these sticks (around here anyway). Our pro shops can't clear these things out fast enough, they're constantly on clearance, so a lot of the newbie and lower end players end up with them.

Also...it's called a Johnson....there are so many good one-liner possibilities there!

The non-matching thing I don't get, my gloves are navy, pants are black, socks are navy, hat is white, etc., who really cares?

Are we NHLers who can afford to purchase a whole new set of equipment if one item dies and we cannot replace it with the same coordinated color as before?

Don't people just buy basic-colored stuff they like and it'll all match anyway?

If you're in a beer league, you get a new jersey each season, are you really supposed to buy all new gear to match that season's jersey? I assume that is not the case...

How long do you like your Johnson?
Ever played with a Johnson?
Always keep two hands on your Johnson.
He has a good grip on his Johnson.
I didn't know he had a black Johnson.
That guy broke my Johnson.
etc.

Long hair
Numbers 99, 0, 00, 1 all get chirped by me
Tinted or mirror visor
Wristbands
Excessive shin pad tape
Wood stick
Mis match socks
Fully tucked jersey

In beer/rec league, yeah, I understand people not wanting to purchase new equipment each year to match. I wouldn't do that either.

But people that are playing serious hockey, it looks pretty stupid if you have like green jerseys and you wear red gloves and a red helmet (as an example). Players tend to play on the same rep, junior etc. team for more than one season anyways, so it's not like you have to get new equipment each year.

Oh hell you guys would have loved me when I played,

Where do I start, no socks, wore sweatpants, ripped at the bottom, and in the middle, and at the top, wore half a pair of pants, on the outside, ripped in the back, I think still had one piece of padding in it, different TYPES of skates, at one point, I had one Bauer and one Graf for a season, different colored tukes of course, I had bright blue gloves for at least 3-4 games, then they became not so bright blue gloves with torn and ripped cuffs, had whatever jersey was in my bag at the time, mostly torn, ripped, covered in blood from sticks and pucks, and skates, and a helmet that was held together in the middle by tape on the inside and gravity on the outside,

LOL, man those where the days...

As far as equipment goes I don't care what other people wear when it pertains to matching.

Things that look dumb ... intentionally miscolored socks, stick tape with graphics on them like skulls or smiley faces. Tucked in jersey .... may as well get a number 99 at the same time.

Guys making sure you know they paid $600 for their skates and usually say things like "Yeah I don't know where the net is" after making a nice backhand.

Basically big egoed morons who deserve belittling.

I will chirp someone who bragged about something like their $600 skates .... I usually wait until they turn a puck over and it results in a goal. "Too bad your $600 skates can't prevent a turnover, maybe if you had paid just a little more you would have been all set".

Fully tucked in jerseys look stupid, but one side isn't a big deal. Enough people do it these days that it doesn't look out of place or that they are simply trying to stand out.

some of you guys are being a little picky i think

Ok basically just stick to normal conservative colors for helmets, gloves, pants, laces, tape, etc.. and you'll be fine.

stay away from #s like 00, 1, goalie numbers: roughly 29-36, and def stay away from numbers: 99, 87, 66, etc...

as far as helmets: I dont like the 8500 either, but not many guys I know will chirp someone who has it. just find a helmet that is safe and feels good for you, in a normal color and it'll be fine.

Chirpable:
colored visors, mirror visor
Colored laces
Colored and patterned blade tape (except for Pink on Hockey Fights Cancer Month or team doing a cancer fundraiser)
Mouth guard hanging from your cage
wheel bags (unless you are a goalie/lady/handicapped)
A complete uniform of your favorite an NHL team
(ex saw a guy once with Blue Jacket pants, socks, gloves, custom jersey, helmet)
Jagr Mullet str8 from the 80s-early 90s

LOL this forum is an invaluable resource. I wouldn't have done most of this stuff anyway but some of it I probably wouldn't have expected.

What's the deal with the hanging mouth guard? So you mean if I have a mouthguard to make sure it's not the kind that attaches to anything . . . like back in youth football or whatever?

I just thought of another one, it has been a while since I have seen it but the white turtleneck shirt under the jersey.
