Rinne's deal sets the bar for Halak?

With the Pred's re-signing Rinne to a two year 6.8 million deal, 2.8 million year one and 4 million year two...does that mean we are looking at Halak demanding 3 - 4 million per in a deal?

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=311320

No way Habs can afford two goalies in the 3 million range and both wanting to play.

Nashville is only overpaying to stay on the cap floor next year. Bank on it.

I still think Halak will ask for 3-4 million. He could probably get 4-5 on other teams

I'm a bit too lazy to look by myself, who are the goalies in the league that make around 3-4M$ a year?

There is no way Halak belongs to that list

Halak at 1.5 is much more realistic

Yes, it seems people don't want to compare apples to apples.
Halak's RFA status ensures that he's under team control for 2 more years. There's no bargaining position for the player , it's simply a balance between what Halak will swallow and what Gauthier thinks is fair. And really the threat of a offer sheet is minimal.

His deal should be considerably less than this.

The intrigue is in the amount that Price will sign for. Because if Halak has poor bargaining position then Price has no bargaining position. If it plays out as it should, and Price is the backup, he shouldn't get much of a raise at all.

All in all the goaltending position should be set for one or 2 years for under $5M, perhaps well under. If it's not then Gauthier didn't play it well.

4.25 - 3 million per (highest to lowest)
Bryzgalov, Ilya
Toskala, Vesa00
Leclaire, Pascal
Khabibulin, Nikolai
Rask, Tuukka
Lehtonen, Kari
Mason Chris

Ward is less, but his new deal of 5+ starts next year.

A first and a third sounds sweet to me on a contract sheet offer and any less than $3 million is a second round pick which I think Montreal will match instead. It almost forces a team to make a trade if they want Halak.

Halak will hold out or go to the KHL for 3 million tax free. He will get 2.5 -3 guaranteed.

Price is entitled to the 10% minimum raise so he is at least 2.5 million per, I can't see Halak getting less than that. All in all it is nice to know that we could have both for 5 combined I don't know if we will see a tandem next season.

This is wrong. Price's base salary is 850,000 this season, so you have to take it as a base if you're talking about qualifying offer.

... and this.

Some folks should do their homework before opening threads. Halak will get no where near Rinne's numbers and neither will Price. I think it's a safe bet that the Habs won't spend more than $4M on their goalie tandem next year.

No way we pay Halak 3 million.

I don't want to start a goalie debate but I think Halak will be traded a la Kessel in july.

If we can have both goalies who are young, quality tenders for a combined $5-6 Million, I'd be happy and think we're in a good situation.

That being said I think both goalies will get around $2-$2.5 Million. It may be more if its a longer term contract that takes away from some UFA years imo.

I'd say 3.8 for Halak
2.4 for Price

If the plan is to keep both goalies, they will get identical salaries. I would expect they both get 2.5 or so. Not bad a sum to have that type of goaltending. But I don't think this goalie controversy can go on for another year. One of the two goalies should go.

Goalie controversies only bother fans and media. Good goalies use it as motivation.

I don't understand this.

Halak has never said anything about playing in the KHL and always that his dream was the NHL. He came over to NA to play junior hockey, he paid his dues in the AHL even when many thought he should be in the NHL (even his coach at the time). I believe Halak is NOT going to the KHL and I say that with 100% confidence.

Unless something changes in a major way, Halak will be, at worst the #1A/B to start next season.

There is one thing to consider here that worries me and it's that Halak's agent seems like the type that might get his client to sit out and threaten going to the KHL. Sure when he's hitting the media up and trying to get Halak more playing time he's looking out for his client but remember the more Halak signs for the more his agent gets and so far this guy reminds me of some of the jerk agents I see all of the time around the NFL.

Now this is just the impression that the guy has made on me by talking to the media and such but it still makes me think that if Halak is shipped out it could be because his agent is trying for a big payout.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight... seeing as they already have $40M committed to next year, that is absolutely ridiculous assumption.

And there are better ways to reach the cap floor. Instead of overpaying for 1 players, you buy 2 players and fill roster spots instead... just one example.
