It'd be more beneficial to Johnson if he didn't have to be constantly traveling back and forth between the Rangers and Hartford just so he can play about 4 or 5 games MAX for us the rest of the way.

Being that Auld is an UFA, I think its a no-brainer if he falls to us.

Having a down season

I wouldnt be opposed to it.
It doesn't "stud" his development at all. No one expected Johnson to see ANY games this season. He got a taste of the pros, now lets send him back to go work on his weaknesses. He's not going to play much at all down the stretch, hell, if he even plays at all

Not that it matters... Sather has more up his cigar smellin' sleeve than a backup... he'll be saving every dollar for what he determines this team "needs"

The Rangers to have any chance at all have to ride Lundqvist hard the rest of the way. They don't have room for error that a backup goalie more or less represents--whether he's a bit raw like Johnson or a career backup like Auld.

Personally I don't think the Rangers are making it this time around and I wouldn't have put a claim in for Auld either.

Auld makes 1 million, Johnson makes 850. Rather see Johnson develop in Hartford for the rest of the year. If Auld goes through waivers again at half the price and with it being so close to the deadline I will be surprised. I can just see Sather trading an asset for a backup when a guy like Auld is just fine

Yes Lundqvist will have to play most of the year but at half the price Auld makes sense on re-entry

According to Cap geek Auld has 238,342 left on his contract so if the Rangers claim him off re entry it would be 119,171 paid to him from the Rangers while Johnson has 202,591 left to be paid as long as he is on the roster so they could save some money if they claim Auld off Re entry.

But again--the less Lundqvist plays (even if only one or two games) the less chance the Rangers have to make the playoffs. I don't think Tortorella has any choice other than play Henrik every single game at least until the Rangers are either in or out. So in a sense to me it doesn't matter who the backup is at this point. One way or another I expect Johnson will get some more games in Hartford. Zaba's done a bit of back and forth too.

I get the pt. Why add to the cap and why get a back up with Henrik needing to play almost all the games in order for the Rangers to make the playoffs. Thing is if Auld is on re=entry then the Rangers will actually add a veteran backup and save on the cap as he willonly cost 500K

I'd imagine Torts may feel a little more comfortable starting Auld against a weaker opponent than he does Johnson.

Auld is being put on re-entry waivers today

Quote:
Instead, Nieuwendyk made the decision earlier this week that he would prefer to keep Turco, and so he started Auld on a waiver process that both sides hope will put the 29-year-old goalie on an NHL roster. Auld cleared primary waivers on Thursday and was assigned to the Texas Stars (AHL). He will be put on recall waivers today, and any team that might need a backup goalie can get him for $125,000 for the remainder of the season.

Does any other team come to mind that needs a backup?

The Flyers need a goalie. Every year. I wonder if Biron will get moved, too.

The fact that Biron HASN'T been moved yet tells you teams aren't willing to put all that much money/return into goaltenders right now.

Hopefully Auld falls to us and Sather doesn't pass him up.

Slats has gotta get this guy on re-entry. For half salary, they'd gain cap space over Johnson or Vally. For cap alone this makes sense. Throw in that Vally and Ochocinco have been getting shelled in the minors, this is really a no brainer.

Calgary would be one. Ottawa too I guess, Leclaire has been horrible since early december.

And as mentioned Philly always needs a goalie but I'm not sure how Auld helps over what they already have.
