Line numbers

Just looking for anyone's advice on Captaining a team. I've never done it before, but look forward to it.

How would you assemble a team with:

12 skaters? 3 forward lines, 3 D? Or, 8 Forwards and 4 D?

13? 3 forward lines, 4 D?

14? 3 forward lines, 5 D?

15? 3 Forward lines, 6 D.

16? 4 forward lines, 4 D?

and 17? 4 forward lines, 5 D?

What level is this? How old are the players? I like 3 lines 4 D for games. That being said if it's an adult league you won't get everyone to show up all the time so you might need a couple extras.

I agree three lines of O and 4 D is the best way to go. That being said I have 16 players on my roster and we end up needing 1-2 subs for 85% of the games due to people having conflicts.

So load up on your roster, and maybe two games out of the season you will deal with a full lineup.

Definately depends and who and how many shop up. I would load up the roster with 16 guys, maybe 17, or so for winter and a couple more for spring/summer (18) because people miss more games in summer.

Usually what we do is this:

12 guys: 8 forwards (3 winger sets and 2 centers who rotate for one another), 2 d pairs
13 guys: 3 forward lines, 2 d pairs (this is the perfect number)
14 guys: 3 forward lines, 5 D guys
15 guys: 3 forward lines, 3 d pairs
16 guys: 4 forward lines, 2 d pairs

Try and get a "core" of three forward lines and 4-6 D, and if you can get half a dozen subs who can play either position. Usually each game a few guys won't show up, and we have to bring in subs. Anything more than three lines and six D feels too crowded.

12 guys = three winger pairs, two centers, four D
13 guys = three forward lines, four D
14 guys = three forward lines, five D
15 guys = three forward lines, six D
16 guys = rarely have this many show up, but rotate the extra guy in with the wingers (kind of a pain)
17 guys = four winger pairs, three centers, six D

So tommorow is our teams' first game.

I have 15 skaters, and this is our first time playing together, of course against the top team in the league!

Should I got with 4 lines of wings, and 3 centers with 2 D pairings or should I go with 3 lines up front and 3 D pairings?

Granted, I am not sure who else could be the other two on defense just yet.

That's what I would do, especially if you're not sure if you could get two other solid defenseman. It kind of sucks for the wings, because you're not getting much ice time, but that's probably better than moving people back on D who may not be comfortable playing it.

I would recommend going with three full lines. If you get someone injured or in the box, then you can adjust, but that's what coaching is all about. Sounds like you don't have a coach to run the bench. But that is what I would do. This way everyone gets to play.

Plus, I would recommend that you divide the lines evenly in strength. This way the other team can't pull a fast one on you. If you are short handed or if you have the man advantage, then you can make special team play lines where you bring the best on the first two lines. Each line playes one minute shifts. This way both special team lines can get the job done without you going in the hole.

While sometimes, depending on the number of people, its good from a coaching standpoint to have more forward lines than D, I would try to make the lines even out as much as possible since in a beer league its all about having fun. Everyone paid the same amount to play, so they should all get the same ice time. Having 4 forward lines and 2 D is just too lopsided imo for a fun league.

Now if its the playoffs and all decide that is the way to go for the sake of winning, I'm all for that, but its got to be agreed upon so no one feels left out.
