Dude, ummm he was referring to the Canada Cups and World Cups...

Not a series of NHL teams against the Russians...hardly a reflection of Canada's best when they are spread out over the entire NHL.

So, umm perhaps when you try and bring your cynicism you might want to be more accurate.

Even though 80% of the NHL players were Canadian at that time it's hardly a reflection of Canada's best.

I also find it a bit goofy that the winner of the NFL's Superbowl is called the World Champion. I also find it a bit goofy that Major League Baseball calls it's championship the World Series...... to each, their own I guess.

Look. Do you understand that the Olympics truly became best vs. best since 1998? Do you get that?

Canada is 2 out of 4 in Gold Medals.

Canada has won 8 hockey gold medals in the Olympics and none of them were referred to as a "miracle."

We are aware that we literally don't own the sport. You are allowed to play it without our consent and you don't owe us royalties for doing so.

We say things like "Hockey is Canada's Game!" because we feel we are the best at it. We believe our juniors, our women and our men are the best on the planet. We have had some success over our nation's history in regards to our hockey teams and in regards to talent we supply the NHL with. Is it really that upsetting when you see signs or HFB posters that say this as well?

A friendly tournament. Watch the games. Those weren't the games of a "friendly tournament." The Canada Cup of 81, 84 and 87 produced some of the most intense, highly competitive games of all-time. That was back when there was still a legit dislike between Canada and the USSR. You don't have it now. You can't have it now. Not when there are so many teammates in the Olympics.

The Olympics has been a legit best on best for the last four events. And in 1992 and 1994, it was a level playing field. Before then, it wasn't.

The World Championships have always lacked the relevance they should have because of their timing. And doesn't mean what it used to mean even in European nations 20-30 years ago. I'm not saying get rid of them. You can't. And you can't change the format, either. You're just going to have to take them for what they are, and accept that they will never have the significance, or the quality, of an Olympics or a World Cup as long as they take place in May. If anyone has a credible idea to give them more significance, I'd love to hear it.

The thread starter is right. It's not a post I would have made. The difference is that in the 70s and 80s, there were two or three teams that had a chance at gold. Canada, the USSR and the Czechs or Sweden. The U.S. and Finland took the next step in their systems in the late 80s. Now there are upwards of half a dozen teams in each tournament that have a shot at winning.

Right.

Because you own the sport.

Got it.

Reel off as many consecutive Golds as the Russians and then I'm down with you guys.

Already done, 1920-1932 - 4 golds in a row, which matches the USSR's run between 1964-1976.

That wouldn't be too hard if, like the Soviets pre-1998, we were permitted to bring all of our top professionals, while every other country were only allowed to bring their top amateurs and therefore severely handicapped. Completely ridiculous...

I am surprised a little by the outrage at the idea the OP would put this together.

Thanks for doing it, actually. I am aware of all those tournaments, but never crunched the numbers. Most publications include the Olympics wehre we sent beer leaguers and the World Championships which are not best on best...just godd players on good players (depending on whose teams sucked in the NHL this year).

If people don't like it...I'm not sure why. It's about as accurate a total as it gets.

Then why did you bring up the USSR's run if it was not this century? Nevermind, the fact that Canada has won 2 of 3 gold medals awarded (and 3 of 4 best-on-best tournaments) this century.

LOL that the Canada Cups of the 70's and 80's were a friendly tournament. They make these Olympics look like a fashion show.

But that's the last time the Soviet Union or Russia has won a true "best-on-best" competition.

There is a massive difference. One game was meaningless in the grand scheme of things, one was for olympic gold medal.

That would just give us a chance to create another miracle. Which we doubtlessly would do. This is America after all

Seriously, to own is to dominate. Canada has not Dominated mens hockey in the modern age. Far from it.

Reel off another three or four golds in a row and the beers are on me.

Remarks like those are too funny. Taht's like teamA beating division rival teamB in a 6 regular season games and then losing 4 straight in the playoffs, but a teamA fan arguing that his team is better because it has won 6 out of 10.
