OT: Medvedev demands resignations over Olympic flop

Quote:
MOSCOW President Dmitry Medvedev demanded Monday that Russian sports officials step down over the country's dismal performance at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Quote:
"Those who bear the responsibility for Olympic preparations should carry that responsibility. It's totally clear," he said. "I think that the individuals responsible, or several of them, who answer for these preparations, should take the courageous decision to hand in their notice. If we don't see such decisiveness, we will help them."
Quote:
Medvedev lamented that Russia "has lost the old Soviet school ... and we haven't created our own school despite the fact that the amount of money that is invested in sport is unprecedentedly high."

I doubt hockey is exempt from this, given their early exit. Pretty interesting stuff, especialy the quote: "(Russia) has lost the old Soviet school ... and we haven't created our own school..."

The Olympic Committee has nothing to do with the training and preparation of athletes. It's the sports federations that do that. To be honest, I'm skeptical of all this predictable finer pointing and resignation demands. All these actions do is appease public anger, but firing a couple of people will not solve anything. Some, like Mutko and Tretiak, are relatively new in their postings and it would be a shame to get rid of them simply because someone has to take the blame. All the athletes and coaches have to acknowledge that they performed at a lower level than many other countries' athletes, and the only thing they can do is learn from their own failures and others' successes to do better in Sochi. If less state funding was spent on bribes and kickbacks, then youth sports development could accelerate a bit. And of course it would help if the corporates would invest more in our sports than English football clubs.

Well, they can't even defend Russians should there be some kind of oppression. Remember biathlon, figure skating in 2002, Nemov in 2004, etc? These *******s did nothing.
