Flyers sign Everett F Shane Harper to contract (WHL)

http://www.capgeek.com/players/displ...id=89934&pos=D

appears to be a three year two way contract worth $1.8M total. Anyone know this kid and his strengths/weaknesses?

MOD EDIT:

Frank on Philly.com now has it, too:

Quote:
Yes, the Flyers did sign free agent Shane Harper yesterday. 3-yr deal, 180k sign bonus. Update will come later after deadline.

Never heard of him. Looks to be another risk-free effort to restock the forward depth like the Pither signing.

Agreed. He did play in the W as a 16 year old, so there must be some skill there.

Well, he has the Forsberg shootout move down pretty well.

And slightly OT, I love Everett's jerseys.

Wow that is insane! I played with him for the first 7 years of hockey. Won state championships and went to Regionals. He has been putting up these numbers in the WHL, but he is an 89. Low risk, high reward signing.

We waited all year to make this move at the dead line?

Well we have to find these guys somewhere since we are a bit short on draft picks in the upcoming years...

Free prospects are great...

His captain laid a viscous check on him after he scored there.

...these moves have nothing to do with the here and now. Those contracts won't even start until next season.

I guess this is a good move and if nothing else the last two pick ups can be possibly used in future trades or for spare parts.
I like these signings and all, but nobody is going to trade for either of these guys when they were available for free yesterday.

Does the timing of all this seem odd to anyone else? Shouldn't Holmgren be focused on some other things?

If you're signing guys that you like, and therefore building a bit more depth in the system...makes it a bit easier to move some other guys going forward.

I'm sure Holmgren didn't do much of anything except OK the final deals. That's what scouting staff are for.

Maybe the timing is smart, sign a couple guys while the OTHER teams are distracted by the deadline?

It also gives us some forward depth for AHL next year, freeing up Homer to throw guys like Matsumoto, Maroon, etc. into deals today, if necessary.

No need to over think it.

Pither and Harper are in junior, they don't count.
