Why has Iginla been left off.....because of his age?

I mean ok sure by 2014 he'll be like 36 but the man has already won 2 gold medals, he racked up 7 points in Vancouver this year, and most importantly he helped set Sid up for the most important goal of the 2010 Olympics.

A Team Canada without Iggy's veteran leadership, skill, and poise sort of baffles me.

I think Iggy might still compete for a spot, but there's a lot of leadership, skill, and leadership on that team as is.

He hasn't missed more than 12 games in a single season in his career, and none in the past three, so he might still be putting up very good numbers. If that's the case then I'm sure he's on the team.

Eberle has so much clutch that you gotta put him on the team.

Also, sure is a lot of Oilers on that team, sign of their future?
Eberle is the only one. I suppose Hall is a possibility though.

Quite a few Flames fans have already jumped on Iginla for his play dropping off. I don't think he will even be considered in 2014 because of guys like Duchene and Kane stepping up.

Hodgson will not make it...

Heatley has been put on 1/2 rosters, really guys? He will be 33, and still be producing 90+ points.

Staal-Crosby-Stamkos
Heatley-Thornton-Carter (Joe will be 34 years old.. I'm sure he will still be playing top notch hockey as well)
Richards-Toews-Nash

Weber-Doughty
Keith-Seabrook
Bouwmeester-Green/Phaneuf/Myers

This is the 2014 Olympics..thats 4 years. I'm sorry but Canada won the gold medal they won't be pulling a US and dropping the whole team for young guys. At most two of Tavares/Duchene/Hall/Seguin/Myers will make the team. People forget the mid to late 20's guys who will be vets by then, and the in between youth, the early 20-mid 20's players who will be up with the top of the league by then

Mike Richards, Jeff Carter James Neal, Jordan Staal, David Perron, Derick Brassard, Claude Giroux, Devin Setoguchi.

Spezza, Penner, Laich, Cammalleri (he'll be 31, not young but keeps producing)

These guys production will likely all remain consistent or go even higher.

I can see Stamkos, Duchene, Tavares and Myers being the ones to potentially make it, but Hall and Seguin? come on.

Thornton looked slow on the NHL-sized ice surface; can you imaging him on an international ice surface? He could very well still be amongst the NHL scoring leaders by that point, but I can't see him make this team given his lack of speed.

No need to flame Peca, take it with a grain of salt guys... holy. It's in FOUR years. A LOT can happen then. Two, maybe three guys may be on that roster who don't even play in the NHL yet.

If you were to predict out 2010 roster back in 2006... no one would have mentioned Keith, Doughty, Toews, etc. Chill.

For Canada's sake, I hope Peca has no actual input in choosing the team.

You know, other than maybe mixing up the lines/defensive combos a bit, I don't see much wrong with the team Peca picked. People are acting as though he assembled a team full of AHL scrubs. In fact, other than perhaps Matt Duchene on the team instead of someone like Laich or maybe Eberle if Eberle hasn't established himself yet by then, I quite like his selections. I'd even go so far as to suggest his team looks much, much better than some of the other proposals by posters in this thread.

While I can agree that a guy like Morrow (and Morrow himself) would probably be less effective on the international-sized ice surface than he was in the past few weeks (due to the speed element - Morrow isn't the quickest guy around), we still need at least a couple of guys who can provide that same element of grit, physicality, PK ability, net presence, and defensive responsibility. Inserting Morrow on the left-hand side with Getzlaf and Perry provided that line (which was pretty bad up until that point) with much-needed energy. That same presence could come from guys like Toews, Richards, and Nash, or who knows if a guys like Simmonds progresses enough over 4 years to get to a level where he fulfills a similar role?

This approach has worked well for Canada in the past, even on international ice (see: Peca, Smyth, Nolan in 2002), and I can't see Hockey Canada totally abandoning it in 2014 - changes might be made to the skillsets of the players selected for the role, but I can pretty much guarantee that at least 1 or 2 of those guys will be on the team.

Pardon my ignorance, but wasn't Simmonds drafted as a D?

He has a tremendous upside as a forward though.

not sure where you got that from....but no....

the people who have seen Simmonds play on a regular basis understand why Peca picked him for the team....

every international team needs a few players like him....works harder then anyone else, is extremely tough, plays with grit, and has great offensive instincts...

You still need an element of grit.
