I was looking for a source/link that he had cleared re-entry waivers as I could not locate one.

I was aware of the conditions of the pick.

I'm guessing this is one of those situations that had Schneider been claimed on re-entry waivers that would have been reported by someone like Bob McKenzie.

It's pretty safe to say that he's cleared waivers since it was NOT reported that he had been claimed.

No source, but no news is good news in this case. Waiver pickups have to be announced before 12pm EST if I recall correctly.

There was virtually no chance of him being claimed anyway. Anyone who picked him up after the deadline couldn't have put him on their roster and I don't think too many owners are keen on paying Schneider to sit at home just to keep him off the Coyotes.

We now need a list of notable sixth round picks to gloat about. Red Wings history will do.

Other players clearing waivers who were put on at the same time have been announced as clearing and being assigned or placed on the active rosters as of March 5. For example Sabourin was placed on recall waivers at the same time as Schneider.

Boston Recalled forward Brad Marchand and goaltender Dany Sabourin from Providence (AHL); assigned goaltender Matt Dalton to Providence.

Montreal Recalled forward Ben Maxwell from Hamilton (AHL).

Thus far I can find nothing at all about Schneider. Nothing at all at the Coyotes website on his clearing waivers.

Capgeek is pretty good at getting them up as they occur but there is no news there.

He's playing for the Salmon Kings, with one game for the Moose, this year, so it's not like he's doing anything different than he would be if the Canucks had retained his rights.

Both Matt Cooke and Brent Sopel were 6th round picks (coincidentally both were also pick #144)

I thought Lubomir Vaic was a 6th rounder, but he was a 9th.

Cooke and Sopel were 6ths, AND EVGENY "CALL ME JOHN" NAMESTNIKOV!!!!!!

Also some plug named Bure. Gary Valk!!

We should have claimed him on re-entry waivers. Then Bettman would have had to pay half his salary and we would have received Zimmerman for nothing (probably what he is worth). Then send him back to Manitoba to ride the bus the rest of the year.

There's players' code and then there's GM code (Kevin Lowe need not to apply). Besides, no Canuck wanted to see him back in that state of the art locker room.

He could always change in the broom closet.

Was the 6th round pick for this years draft, or 2011?

If wikipedia is correct, it is 2010. Scroll down to conditional pick information. I am still amazed we got anything for Schneider who passed through waivers, 2 months ago. Looks like we will have to find some late round gems this draft.

Various reports suggest the 6th rounder is this year, 2010. Good news for us. Stock up on some lower-round picks, maybe we can acquire a 2nd or 3rd!

Really, a nice deal for a useless asset.

The 6th rounder goes a long way toward mitigating the loss of the 3rd-rounder in the Alberts deal which so many were complaining about here.

Essentially we lose pick #85 or so, and replace it with pick #170 or so.

Unfortunately I rather have the cap space available that Schneider took up than the 6th round pick.

Gillis may have been able to be more flexible in acquiring other players (via trades or during the off-season).

Yes it is a 6th round pick in 2010.

::Edit::

By the way...Botchford was the first to report this.

He is listed on the Coyotes roster, so I doubt he has been claimed by another team.

Oh, absolutely. It was one of the very few scouting errors (or character evaluation mistakes, since Schneider didn't really play that badly) Gillis has made, and really his only mistake of the last offseason.

But all things considered, to bail out of the mistake and get a pick for it isn't bad.

Yeah, he did well to clean it up. But I hope this practice of cronyism is just a coincidence on his UFA signings, because in this one it looks to have clouded his judgment.
