Seriously? An emotionless fight off the face-off or equivalent type thing. "You get paid to fight and so do I, lets earn our paycheck tonight."
As for the OP, I'd say 40-45%.

Just because a fight happens off the face-off doesn't mean it is staged. It could be a reaction to something that happened/was said earlier in the game or even in another game.

The pure staged fights like the Laraque vs Ivanans one I would say probably are around 15-20%.

I appreciate your opinion, but I think differently.

Smell that "stage fighting" people? That's the smell of victory for none of you having a comeback to that video!

Boo ya!

If it means that the anti-stage fight people have no comeback, then I look at it as winning.

What are we considering "staged"? The vast majority of fights these days are between their respective teams' enforcer/agitators. It seems very few are spur of the moment angry fights.

I'll go with 65-75% staged.

The OP may want to change the name of this thread to "Percentage of fights off a face off"

Maybe it's because the Oilers don't have a true heavyweight but I'd say almost none of their fights are staged. They usually come after a hit or a scrum. Even Stortini rarely has a chance to just square off with a heavyweight.

...and I don't think fights like these are staged just because they come right off the faceoff.

Staged =/= right off a faceoff.

I'd say about half the fights in the NHL are staged, perhaps as low as 40-35%

The percentage that occurs right off a faceoff doesnt bother me and I dont consider that to be staged.

To me staged would be if they were scripted like a WWE card where the guys know what is going to happen before the event.

I think staged gives non hockey people the wrong impression

What is the right impression? I'm a hockey fan who thinks fighting is and can be an integral aspect of the sport, but I'm not really a fan of the vast majority of post-faceoff fights. Fighting in hockey with the instigator rule really does a disservice to both fighting and the sport. Two 7 min/gm 4th line players are typically the participants who otherwise have very little/no impact on the game. It's entirely too side-showy. I'm not even sure what you were meaning by the WWE reference; even non-hockey fans know that hockey fights aren't scripted "you hit me here, I hit you there, we grapple a bit and both fall down."

Good example of a "staged" fight, I think (watch the whole video):

I find the fights between the small guys and non fighters much more entertaining than the Heavyweights. Kennedy's my favorite scrapper on the Pens

You never know what is being said out on the ice. The amount of trash talking is insane. Just because they drop the gloves off the face off doesn't make it staged.

The problem with banning staged fights is the term staged is vague. If the define staged, the league could get rid of them if they so please. But that would be stupid. If they define staged as a fight that happens off a face-off, then guys, as Laraque said, will skate around and do 5 Mississippi's and then fight.
