Im no fan of Torts, but I think the source of Avery's consistency issues is Avery himself.

His two best games this year were ones he probably viewed as personal...against Dallas, who kicked him to the curb..and yesterday after being a healthy scratch.

Lets face it, Avery doesnt have to score to be effective. In fact, I think any offensive contribution from him should be considered a bonus. Yesterday, the two goals were nice, but what was even nicer is how he was engaged the entire game. Crashing on the forecheck, yapping, playing physical, etc. Thats his game, and we just havent seen it much at all this season.

No doubt, I think it's up to Avery to bring that kind of intensity every night. My only concern with him, is how effective can he be when the other team is wise to his act?

Avery's game depends on some kind of reciprocity from the opponent. Yes, he has some skill and should score more often, but his real mark on the game comes from getting other people off THEIR game.

I don't think we (or Torts) should expect him to be a difference maker each and every night. It's asking too much of him. He has some skill, but above all, he's an agitator. He needs the other team to lose discipline and retaliate on his actions or he'll be expose for what he is...a smallish 3rd line forward.

it seems as though the Avery benching was a good coaching move - they win the game in which he's benched and he returns and scores two goals in a win.

I think I saw a quote from Lapperriere in todays' Daily News which summed up Avery quite nicely. His quote was something along the lines of Avery being the worst teammate ever and the Rangers players feel the same way...

I have to wonder if that is just sour grapes on the part of Lapperriere...after all Hank and Voros seem to love Avery...if Twitter and all that is any indication...

I know some players on L.A. and Det were not unhappy when Avery departed, although the only name I can recall is Dustin Brown, I believe.

I think Andrew Gross mentioned that comment and said that the word is Avery has done a lot to be a better teammate recently

Avery played a helluva game. Good for him. My only beef is consistency so I'm hoping he keeps this up.

I don't know about the wording "divided team".

Isn't the implication that Torts isn't treating everyone the same?

There is always groups on a hockey team.

Somehow, I imagine all the Swedes on Detroit hangout together. Man, what a "divided team" those Red Wings are.
