Washington has the weakest (physically) defense I've ever seen a contender play with. Boston, Ottawa, New York, and Montreal are first round fodder. One might be able to make a run, but they're very weak teams. The Sabres don't have an offense. Pittsburgh is always scary, but they're beatable. We can outplay them (as we've shown) but still find ways too lose. Their defense isn't all that great either. We have a stellar defense and a stacked offense. Our only flaw is goaltending, which has been pretty good despite being unproven.

New Jersey is the only team without a legitimate flaw.

So, since everyone else sucks, let's hand the Eastern Conference to NJ. Might as well throw all the other teams out because they're all garbage.

who cares where we finish as long as we get the devils in the first round. I never thought I would say it but they are the only team we matchup against in the first round. Finally 10 years later we are ready for the devils. Who are these Olvechkin and Crosby fools anyway? Talk about a time machine hot tub movie! the Flyers head office should be in that movie. I really don't know if we are going to make it and I don't think that is being outlandish.

We do not match up well against the Devils.

If the playoffs started today:

WSH vs. BOS
PIT vs. MTL
BUF vs. PHI
NJD vs. OTT

Then:

WSH vs. PHI - toss up
PIT vs. NJD - toss up

I think they finish 6th, and probably leave the first round in 6 or 7.

I can see them maybe getting past the first round, but they don't go farther than that.

I think we win whoever we play in the first round. Thats only because I think we wont finish 7 or 8th. Then the second round if we play the Pens we win, the Caps we lose. Eventually think we lose to the Caps either way.

They may have a soft D but they took our team to 7 games a few years ago and they are A LOT better this year. Yea we beat the Hawks, they beat them on the road without the best player in the world.

There is a way to beat them though. Lull them to a false sense of security. Keep the game tied till the third then try and score. Teams like the Pens and Caps have players that score at will, they will come back at you in the end or give you hell trying.

That said I don't think we are THAT outmatched against them. If we crash and bang them they have certain players that won't stand up.

I honestly think they can win the cup. prob a 5 or 6 seed like most say, but then a magic cup run. Did anyone think Cam Ward would win the Canes a cup? Lavi must have that magic.

We're better than we were two years ago as well.

I think you play Washington like that. You crash and bang them on the forecheck. Their defense is unbelievably soft. As long as you can keep the pressure on you can keep them pinned down. When that starts to happen, Washington has a tendency to force the issue on the long breakout pass; a lot like what we used to do all the time under Stevens. That's where our defensive depth and the experience of guys like Pronger and Timonen comes in. I think we have an advantage if we get mobilized on the forecheck and get in the face of some of their defensemen. The regular season and playoffs are two completely different beasts after all.

The Penguins are a beast of a different nature. They use their third line to do all the talking so to speak. They did to us last year in the first round exactly how I'm explaining we should work in order to beat the Caps. They sent the Staal line after our soft defense. In order to play them you're going to need to neutralize that in the neutral zone. You can't let them start playing dump and chase, and if they absolutely force the issue, then you need to keep getting your own pucks deep in their defensive zone in order to make them work for every inch of ice. If you can keep their crashers from running at guys like Timonen, Carle, Coburn, and Krajicek, you can keep their game off its normal pace. That's where guys like Pronger come in. There's no one better in the game right now with the exception of Lidstrom who can control the pace of a game. Pronger's size will also help out a bit.

I think we can do this with a competent coach. We're not getting home ice, so we're going to have to work for it.

I think they'll finish the regular season 5th or 6th, though 6th would be preferable to avoid NJD/Pens in the first. I quite honestly think this team can do pretty well in the playoffs. Something about setting up and focusing on one team they seem to be good at, the way they swept both home-and-homes with MTL and the Devils before the Olympics makes me feel alright about facing pretty much anyone in a 7 game series.
