3/15 Update

Seems like the trainers are working overtime, but that's the pain of playing through an eighty-two game season.

Per Russo's blog:
Backstom: Still out with a groin injury and won't be rushed back.

Burns: Hip injury and is day-to-day. Expected to play against the Oilers on Tuesday.

Boogaard: "Sore" nose and busted ego; day to day.

Nolan: Dreaded lower body injury and trying to play through the pain.

Sheriff Shane: Out with leg injury.

Zanon: Shaking off a blocked shot last night (missed half the second period) and should play through the pain against the Oilers.

Bouchard: Still out with concussion; no time-table for return

With Backstrom out, we will be seeing Harding again for another game. Hope he keeps playing like this because he is playing great lately. Hopefully Burns gets back in there, it's so hard to watch Scott play defense.

The problem with Scott is that he's being called to do way more than he should given Burns and Hnidy are out, Zanon's not 100% and Barker is still learning the Minnesota system after taking over for the previous #1 defenseman. Scott is a 6/7 defenseman at best and he's being forced to play a 4/5 role.

Yeah, I guess he is. Still, I think he's just about as useless as Boogaard is since I don't think we need an "enforcer."

You need an enforcer in the NHL; however whether or not it is a heavyweight (let alone two heavyweights) is up for debate.

I'd rather have someone who can scrap, and at least be responsible in his own end and put in a couple of points and fight rather than having Boogaard who has no goals in how many games? (and how many points?) Then Scott who doesn't seem very good on his skates, but I'd rather us keep a guy like Hnidy who can at least play some okay defense and fight.

That's essentially how I feel. There's no need for a team to have two heavyweights that are liabilities on the ice. If they can get one who can also contribute to the on-ice product then I'm fine with having him play (even if it's a 6/7 defenseman) but the end goal in the new NHL is to have team toughness rather than one individual. Minnesota is getting there with guys like Clutterbuck, Nolan and Hnidy but as a whole they are still stuck in an old NHL mindset.

Then again, it could be worse. At least there's no Boogaard-Simon-Fedoruk line.

Perhaps my memory is a bit hazy, but when was Hnidy playing okay defense? Maybe my view is slanted based off the horrible games I've seen him play in person this year. He gets beat more often than a Robert Tate led secondary.

I don't know - Jimmy Hitchcock had that one good year with like four touchdowns.

Anyways, my expectations are lower because all he needs to do is be solid enough as a third-pairing defenseman and not let down whomever his partner is. Overall, he has been disappointing but it's shades better than having to use Scott.

Oh he's definitely better than Scott. I was led to believe the Wild signed a solid 3rd pairing d-man who would scrap a little more than he has.

If they must have that enforcer element next season I'd prefer they keep Scott & move him to forward - assuming they can't do better in FA. I like Boogaard, but he costs too much for a team with as many holes as the Wild have.

This is my thinking/hope as well. Scott is too much of a liability to play defense on an everyday basis. But if Richards must have an enforcer plug in the everyday line-up, save some cash with Scott and use his as a forward. It's not as if you're losing anything on the offense end from Boogaard.

I just want to see Boogaard and Scott have a go at it at some point in the future...

Does anyone know what's up with Matt Kassian and his contract situation?

He's a RFA at season's end currently making 500k. Which would put him at about 550K for next season if the Wild choose to keep him around. The site below is a great site for cap/salary numbers. We use it a lot for GM games around here. We just got done with a GM not too long ago and I included the Wild's roster going into next season that I did.

So is Kassian NHL-ready? Also what trades were made to end up with that lineup?

NHL ready as in, can he hold is own against some of the better fighters? Or can he skate at the NHL level? I would say no on both counts, anyway, though.

A lot of trades were made. A lot of stupid ones and some decent. I just felt like blowing the whole thing up and seeing what I could walk away with pretty much for the heck of it...

Well looks like Kassian isn't an option then, which is too bad.

And those are some interesting trades given a few of those undervalue the former Wild players and a couple ended up being less than what the real trade was. I'm also guessing Fowler ended up happening because that team tanked hard to get the #3.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I did like the return on what I got for Burns, though. Getting Eller on this squad, hypothetically, would be ideal. That kid is going to be a star.

I need to move Schultz for cap space issues (well, and I don't care for him) because I did have a deal in place for Semin but the time for the game ran out. A first line of Sharp-Koivu-Semin would be fantastic. Especially with Latendresse-Eller-Havlat coming right after.

But ya, a few of the deals are pretty bad. Basically because I had other deals lined up that didn't really materialize.

The girl and I are in the same boat. I'm sort of hoping that Russo will come up with whether or not Wellman is playing sometime before the game starts. Otherwise, I think I'm just staying home and taking it easy.
