Downie with the (creative) cheap shot on Crosby.

Nobody dropped the gloves against Downie. Pittsburgh has chemistry issues.

We were in Wooster over the weekend for a Squirt travel tournament. My son's team made it to the championship game and we all went BW-3 before the final and got to see the start of the 3rd period, 3-0 Hawks.

Every time the Caps scored, all the kids went nuts cheering, it was awesome. When we got back to the rink, the locker room speech touched on the fact that Washington never gave up and came back from a 3 goal deficit. Good timing (although we lost the final 1-0, what a heartbreaker).

I'm in Florida & saw that on TV as it happened. Thought it was ugly.

Anyone who thinks the Sharks are true Cup comtenders should watch the way they gave up as soon as they were down 3 goals yesterday. Same old Sharks. If they have to play Detroit in round 1, don't expect them in Round 2.

Eh, if anything it just shows they're still inconsistent. I haven't watched many of their games since the Olympics, but one I did see was March 2nd against the Devils. They were down 4-0 going into the third, and basically just dominated the rest of the game. They lost 4-3, but they definitely can turn it on when they want to.

Still, like most people who like the Sharks, I'll think they're Cup contenders when they're within a game or two of raising it. They usually have one strong round, and then who knows what will happen.

So you're saying we can finally get Joe Thornton? ..or Marleau? to play with Rick Nash?

[I'm being somewhat serious. Can they afford that line another year going out in the first round?]

I'd guess Marleau would be the most likely casualty in such a scenario, since he's the easiest to get rid of. Not sure if I'd want him or not; that'd be an ugly, ugly bidding war, and those tend to be bad news.

OSU fired Men's Hockey Coach John Markell.

http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/2010/03...going_on.shtml

I know Doug MacLean invented hockey, but Markell did a decent job of growing grass-roots hockey in Columbus long before MacLean even heard of Columbus.

Seems as though other teams are in the same boat we are:

Quote:
What they (Sabres) really need is their kids to grow up while they shop for a true No. 1 center, a defenseman who can quarterback the power play and another scorer on the wing.
Torres and Paetsch are also discussed, just thought some folks might be interested.

I'd say that in a comparison we're in a rowboat and they are in a boat with a powerful engine called Ruff. We have never had a coach who can get the most of any type of a roster, which Ruff seems to be able to do. It's a helluva lot easier for them to grow their talent, when they get into the right role immidiately as they take the step to NHL. I envy them...

Ruff has done a good job over the years but having Miller has helped... I will say the evolution of Miller did not happen in one season.

Good point on Miller. It's tougher to be right in the middle of said evolution...

I can't recall a rule change being implemented so quickly in the past but it appears new rules for blindside head hits are on the fast track:

Quote:
The NHL wants to adopt a new rule against blindside hits to the head before the end of this season, according to two reports Wednesday.
Quote:
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Toronto Star the new rule could be in place by the end of the regular season and in time for the playoffs.

Not sure why it's just blindside head hits that are being talked about.

Any head hit should be worthy of looking in to...

I didn't think it funny in the least, Robert, but certainly typical of Avery.

Well, I've seen things happen on the ice that are not funny in the least.. what he did was dumb but so different and strange it made me chuckle. To each his own.

I think it's good that something like that happens once in a while. If there wouldn't be any controversy, we'd just have more games no-one remembers when the sun rises next day.

Andrew Peters golf swing gesture, Jeremy Roenick spotlight dance, Avery waving his stick, Tie Domi fighting a spectator, Ovechkin warming his hands with his stick as a campfire... Entertaining stuff! Yet none has anything to do with the game of hockey itself.

But every sport, from Formula 1 to hockey and back to NASCAR is constantly losing everything entertaining, as the athletes are demanded to be "faceless".

I neither ask nor expect jocks to be faceless, I merely hope that one occasionally demonstrates some class and sportsmanship. Too much, I know, but I'm crazy that way.

Nice game in Edmonton tonight against the Wings. Dubnyk gets his first NHL win (1-8 after tonight). Brule scores in the shootout (with 2 assists on the night in a strong game overall). Jason Williams goes next, needing to score to stay in it, and does. Dubnyk eventually has to make one save to win it, and does. Fun game overall, with the Wings making it interesting by scoring with something like .2 seconds left in the third.
