Curent State of the team and the future?

I'm not saying bring Torts back or anything but if Tochett had to deal with the injuries he did in his last season it would be scarey.
Vinny is finally looking like his old self which is good news for next year.

The teams biggest weakness is still the D. They are overmatched and thats why they constantly make mistakes or taking penalties. Ohlund, Foster, Hedman and Lundin are the only legitimate NHL'ers. Foster is a PP specialist and Hedman is a rookie that at times has looked great and other times not so great. I still wonder why is the 19 year old Rookie the only one that still gets opposing players away from our goalie every single time?

After those 4 which every other D man is borderline at best and it shows. Some of them like Smaby have the desire but just not the skill. The lightning doesn't have a puck moving D-man which really has hurt this team at times. Ranger was and never will be the answer to this, wherever he is. This is the area of the team that should be priority.

The scary part of our defense. Lundin took the right attitude when sent down and used it to get his confidence back up and work on his game a bit. Not that many people actually do just that even the AHL being the development league for the NHL. Simply, we lucked out with Lundin. Though I'm not complaining and I'm extremly pleased with him.

Second Hedman. I think its a bit of a mix of confidence and the wear and tear of the NHL coming on him. Hes still an NHLer but hes struggling bad. The off season will be huge for him.

Take those two out....and were stuck with Ohlund and Foster........

Ranger would be a huge help if he comes back and is old self. If 2 of Mahalik (sp), Wishart or Lashoff are near ready I would prefer them over Smaby, Foster or Mez (new GM please find a fool to take him).

I think the system (Rick Wilson) has to take some of the blame here as well.

We have more talent then we had last year and we are way worse than last year.

I HATE our defense zone coverage as the result is teams camp out in our own end. We have this zone going where teams just move the puck between the zones and players will be right on teh guy and peal off and let the next guy take him. Only the next guy is 3 strides away from him so that gives them time and space.

Not every team out there has a fantastic puck moving defense man. Yet they some how manage to move it up the ice. We have trouble getting out of our own way.

Personally I am looking forward to the house cleaning we have coming. We do not have the players necessary to play the systems the coaches want yet they force that square peg into that round hole all season long.

Tocc is ok - and Cap seems like an upgrade from Reese (who I thought was horrible) but the rest can go at any time.

I think some of the suckage Smaby has had may be result of Wilson. Smaby under Sullivan was bomb *** and he looks like a completely different Matt Smaby out there from last year.

We need defence, we have some offensive but we need some offense from the 3rd and 4th lines like the other teams. Niity is playing really great but I don't think, he has what it takes to be in the net 60-65 games. We need a big size goalie, a guy like Mike Smith but who can save the pucks when we need too so it's not Mike Smith. We need to find real winger for Vinny. Guys that can give the puck to Vinny and score on his pass not to choke like Bochenski last game. Dump Tanguay, Bring in 1 real second liner. So our lines would be: downie-stamkos-marty
New player-lecavalier-Malone
Purcell-THompson- New guy that can score 15-20 goal and play on the PK
Fedoruk-Konopka- Veilleux or a guy like Blair Jones

Dump Meszaros not relative in D and he seems to always missed his shots

On D: Ohlund-Hedman (Hedman need a guy strong in D to help him)
A new guy-Lundin
Foster-Smaby
Walker

In goal: Marty Brodeur LOL....we can dream

I would say dump Mike SMith.

sign a guy like Biron give him play time if it doesnt works change at the trade deadline
Keep Niity as a number 2

They picked a really bad time to start a marketing campaign using images from 2004 and a winning team and then this group of idiots start going to hell. Just pull the ads and put something different out there. The only thing this season's team has in common with 2004 is that they play in Tampa and their name is the Lightning. Nothing else comes close.
