Well, Henrik actually did that unlike Kesler...

Where is the discount?

"If we're going to win the Cup, we need guys to take pay cuts. The way the salary cap is now, you really can't get what you're worth now if you want to win. Everybody in this lockerroom knows that." Ryan Kesler - March 18/09

And yet 366 days later...

Such a disappointment... but then being Canucks fans I suppose disappointment is a given.

Talking the talk but not walking the walk.

If you read the thread you would have read that Kesler was looking for 5.5 mil.

5 mil IS a discount, maybe not as large as one as we would have liked but still a discount.

Aand, here we go.

Wetcoaster, what - in your opinion - is Ryan Kesler worth? Did he get it?

This is not pressing your hot buttons but a legitimate question: what were the circumstances surrounding those comments by Kesler of taking a hometown discount? Was it Burrows' contract? Or something else?

If anyone thinks I'm muckracking, you can delete this post.

5 isnt low enough for a PPG Slelke forward? Basically a better offensively, tougher Jere Lehtinen? Some of you really need to grasp reality.

Edler-Salo
Volchenkov-Ehrhoff
O'Brien-Bieksa

Raycroft
I don't see how that roster is affordable.

Firstly, I don't see Johnson being brought back. Alex Bolduc can fill in well for him.
Second, Rypien probably plays over Hordichuk.
Third, if we are to ice a similar roster to that, I'd expect Bernier to be gone. Perhaps Hansen slides up, or potentially an all-rookie line of Grabner-Hodgson and Schroeder?

Bernier has to be the odd man out. It's hard to justify paying a 3rd liner more than $2 mil, when he doesn't do anything in particular well enough that you can't replace it for cheaper.

I can see it working out like:

Sedin (6.1) - Sedin (6.1) - Burrows (2)
Raymond (2) - Kesler (5) - Samuelsson (2.5)
Grabner (.843) - Hodgson (1.695) - Hansen (.75-ish)
Rypien (.550) - Bolduc (.550) - Hordisuck (.775)
13th forward (.750)

Volchenkov (5) - Edler (3.25)
Bieksa (3.75) - O'Brien (1.6-ish)
Salo (3.5) - Ehrhoff (3.1)
Alberts (1.1)

Luongo (5.33)
Backup (.65)

$56.893 million. I assume the cap will rise again to about $58 million.

Please stop the talk of trading Raymond already.

Great teams get built one player at a time and they get dismantled one player at a time.

Raymond has been outstanding, skates miles, still improving and getting stronger, carries the play in the opposite zone time and time again, very difficult to defend against, what else do you want from the guy for pete's sake? He's 24 years old.

Raymond must be re-signed. Period.

Great signing! Kesler is easily on of the best up and coming players of the decade. His defensive style as a forward is a fantastic contribution to this team.

GO CANUCKS GO!

I agree. Especially because he could potentially be had in the $2M range. If Gillis goes into contract talks and points to the Burrows and Samuelsson contracts, we could potentially see Raymond signing for $6M/3 years. (structured, $1.5M, $2M, $2.5M)

hansen has probably been a better fit on the 3rd line.

The only thing that bernier had going was his hitting. He played well against st.louis in the playoffs, and his hitting was pretty important.

The thing is, hes shown that his offensive instinct/confidence/hockey sense is not good enough for a top 6 role.

A 3rd liner that can hit can easily be had for less than 2 mil.

Wetcoaster is right. 5 million for a guy with a shot so weak it couldn't even break a pane of glass? 5 million for Ryan "Hands of Stone" Kesler? And for him to say something to the media, and then not exactly follow through with what he said, but still kind of follow through, just not quite to the extent we were lead to believe? DISGUSTING. This is a garbage contract for a player who will never hit 20 goals at the NHL level.

No kidding, for some reason people want to trade raymond because he has value now?

Raymond brings an element of speed that is crucial to the canucks counter attack and overall forecheck.

Many nights hes been our 3rd most dangerous forward behind the twins.

It doesn't mean any one guy is the sacrificial lamb and has to give up multiple-millions, it's a buy-in from everyone to take a bit less for the greater good.
And this is why we could be set for a loooong time. The trickle-down effect here should hopefully have long lasting implications. The rookies watch our core taking pay cuts and in turn do the same when it's their time to sign. It's taken a long time, but the Canucks have finally created a good culture.
The next few years should be fun times for us Canuck fans. There's NO reason we need to trade our prospects or draft picks.

I've never been so optimistic before. In the WCE days, Bertuzzi and Naslund had such a sense of entitlement about themselves. While we had a solid team then, we never had any prospect depth. That changes now.

Kesler didnít get what he was worth. He would have received at least 6 million from any other team.
