I'd rather simply have no captain, and 3 A's. Hemsky, Horcoff, and the third being a toss-up. Souray, if he's still around. If not, then possibly Whitney, Gagner, Smid, or Comrie. I can't exactly identify which one specifically deserves it, but those guys seem like the front runners. Maybe Stortini, even.

I'd rather enter next season without a C on a jersey, and see which one of our players takes the initiative. I mean, we should be giving the C because the guy is already a leader, so let's wait and find out which of our kids could possibly be that guy. Or see if perhaps Hemsky, Horcoff, or Comrie step up and take on that role with the other veterans gone.

-JH.

If not Moreau, it'll be Souray or Horcoff.
Let's not confuse bad contracts with bad players and bad leaders.

Horcoff has been playing better lately with fewer minutes and lesser linemates . I think the pressure of being on the first line , playing twenty plus minutes a night and being expected to put up some points got to him . Not that I'm willing to give him the free pass the bloggers do ( carrying the team on his shoulders, injured , bad sticks , no luck blah blah blah ) but I think Horcoff should be left to anchor a checking line and PK unit and wear an A . Giving him the C would be hardly any better than letting Moreau continue .

I was all for Souray as captain , but he seems to be sending mixed signals about wanting to be in Edmonton next season . With Vishnovsky gone we can certainly afford to keep Souray but I'm not nearly as gung ho on the idea of him as captain as I was last season .

Nobody else even really qualifies . So I agree with the posters saying we roll without a fixed captain next season . Give one of the young guys a chance to step up and take the role .

Wow, we sound like Leaf fans with Dion Phaneuf. I think Whitney's been okay, too, but there's probably a reason why Pittsburgh and Anaheim fans hate him. Tone it down a bit.

Horcoff would seem like a candidate but its time to give up the ghost on this mythical 'leadership core' that this team has been hanging its (non-playoff) hat on for what seems like 20 years now.

I think it should be Hemsky. Yeah, he's not really 'captain material' (if we had an obvious candidate, this probably wouldn't be a 30th place team), but this is his team now. Let him take the reins and see what he could do.

One would have to be damn near brain dead to give Horcoff the "C". My candidates for leadership roles are:

-Souray
-Whitney
-Gagner
-Smid
-Hemsky

Not necessarily in that order.

But I am all for waiting for someone to EARN it.

Just give the C to whoever we draft 1st round. Tell him it's his to lose and the entire success of the team is on his shoulders.
That ought to break him!

Moreau
Horcoff

would all be ahead of Whitney at this point.......although 2 or 3 of those guys could be traded
If managements words really mean anything that they want to change the culture of teh team. Giving it to any of the people you mentioned would be completely retarded. Horcoff can't live up to his contract so giving him the C would be idiotic and I'm sure the coaching staff sees this.

If Moreau is traded we either have no official captain or we do a revolving captain. Then the season after if a palyer from the new core steps up I think they would get the C.

Why? Moreau is a HORRIBLE captain.

Horcoff would be a HORRIBLE captain.

Souray would be an okay captain though I expect him to be moved.

If Whitney keeps playing as he has he is a legit contender.

I have a feeling that in Oiler fashion we would sign Aaron Johnson and give him the C next year.

I'd be down for him as an assistant next season.

Lets just give the C each night to a member of the opposition, you would have a better chance of someone sticking up for the team or saying some encouraging words out of sympathy than any leadership being shown with Moreau being our captain.

Could you imagine if the C was on the player's draft jersey this June? That would be a first.
