OT: the improved play of Montador since the olympic break should be noted.

Agreed.

If Rivet gets hurt, he'll sit. There's no other possibility.

It's inarguable that his play has diminished since he's put on a Sabres jersey, and I'm frankly a bit scared to think about what he'll look like next season, but this team can overcome his deficiencies but can't replace his intangibles.

This argument sounds familiar. Thankfully, Rivet doesn't cost $7 million.

I wish this thread was about Stafford or Tallinder, so I could reply:

"...when he pees."

And next season is when, if needed b/c he's the #7 guy, Ruff can remove the "C" from his sweater and hand it to someone else. Face saved for Rivet[1], lineup options returned to Ruff and someone from the highly-paid 'core' group can step into the role properly.

Stripping someone of the captaincy on a loser, ala Carolina, is one thing. Doing so on a division leader is asinine. If Ruff were to do that now, just so he can sit Rivet and play Butler, then I'd join Jame's camp to have him removed as coach, because that would be prima facia evidence that he's lost his friggin' mind.

And insane people shouldn't be head coaches.... they should be analysts for ESPN.

Ba-dum-bum.[2]

Ta,

You can't sit him.

It's just unfortunate that based on his actual play, and the improvement Monty's shown since the break, he should be the odd man out.

However, like others said, leadership, captaincy, etc...
You just can't sit him.

I'm sorry.... horrible comparison. Drury was never a liability on the ice and actually brought something quantifiable to the table when he was here. His goal totals don't lie.

It's good that expectations are way down for Rivet, our captain. It's real good that people have allowed him to continue to make mistakes without criticism simply because he's the captain. Yet we give endless flak to guys like Sekera and Butler who are half as painful to watch drag themselves around.

The one thing that bothers me about Rivet is that I've noticed he really turns up the intensity -- against Western Conference teams.

Being an insecure Sabres fan, I always quietly interpreted that behavior as a sign Rivet left his heart in San Francisco, and has never fully bought into his role/time here in Buffalo. I hope I'm wrong, I hope I'm paranoid -- scratch that; I'm always paranoid -- but I still hope I'm wrong.

A part of me expects to see a side of Rivet emerge in the playoffs that will make us all say "now that's a ****ing captain."

Wishful thinking?

I like Rivet, but not at 3.5 million a year. Part of me would like to see him traded for whatever in the offseason and have the Sabres sign Jay Mckee to be a 6th/7th depth D man with some leadership skills.

But that is only if someone else is brought in to be a 3/4 D man...
