It looks like he was a d-man that they moved to center...

Anyone know?

Won some Portland Winterhawk award for "character"

He is a FORMER DMAN that was converted to center. Good size and good wheels and is a long term project at this point.

I'm hoping he is good defensively or has nice mobility... because his numbers look very, very average. I'm sure there must be some aspect of the game he excels at, otherwise Gillis wouldn't have signed him. BTW, how was he signed anyway? I always thought that an undrafted junior player who was draft-eligible could only be signed for a short period after the draft. Obviously I am wrong.

I can't official confirmation, but this is coming form his Dad. Stefan Schneider has signed a 3 year entry level deal with the Canucks. Stefan is 6'4, 205 lbs and is a shutdown c-man for the Winterhawks (played a year with the giants as a 17 year old). He was a d-man, but former Canucks assistant coach, Mike Johnson, saw something else with him and converted him to a defensive c-man position last season.

I had the pleasure of coaching Stefan in Midget AAA and he is one of the best kids I have ever coached and even when he was 15, playing with 17-18 year olds, he was our go to guy. He may not ever play with the Nucks, but he is a terrific player, skates like the wind and thinks the game better than anyone I've ever coached.

I can't find official confirmation other than a Winterhawks blog link, but I'm pretty sure it's true, and the fact that Johnson is his Jr coach makes this rumour very plausible.

Congratulations Stefan, good things come to people who deserve it and you deserve it.

edit: Confirmation from Stefan himself that he signed the deal yesterday.

He's no longer a defenseman, he was converted to Centre, he's a defensive centre that plays for the Portland Winterhawks.

tell Ryan Johansen to throw 1 on 1 interviews with other teams so the canucks have a shot at him.

Huh.

He was a pretty iffy beanpole of a defender when he played for the Giants in 2007-08.

Haven't seen any WHL games this year, unfortunately, so can't comment too much on his game as a forward. 23 points as an overage players is ... not very promising, though.

Sounds like he's been used as a #3 defensive center in Portland. Will find the step up the AHL huge as a WHL 3rd-liner. Probably Victoria-bound next year.

I don't really get this signing. It would have made more sense to have the Moose sign him.

As far as I'm concerned, Gillis has made too many positive moves for me to doubt this signing in any way. I don't understand it but then again, I'm not Mike Gillis.

I'll leave it at that, just like I left the Samuelsson signing at that and proceeded to watch him score 30 goals this year (before his unfortunate injury).

Are you sure that they signed him, because it's not up on capgeek yet.

^^^ It's a two-way ELC, he'll be playing in Victoria/Manitoba, so I don't see what the big deal is. Do you actually think he's going to be playing for Vancouver next year or something?

It's actually a very good source.

I meant as a SPC for next year (like how the Moose signed Rypien, Burrows etc)
