Flyers looking at Esche

http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/loca...-in-esche.html

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA – Where in the wide world have the Flyers been looking for their next goaltending help?
How about Russia?

A Flyer source confirmed Sunday night that the team has explored the possibility of bringing back former Philadelphia goaltender Robert Esche.

General manager Paul Holmgren said he has been looking into other options for this crucial stretch drive.

“Yes,’’ Holmgren said when asked if he had been checking out other candidates to step in for the last two weeks of the season. "We’ve looked at a lot of different options. Without naming names, I can tell you we’ve explored every option we’ve had.’’

Esche, 31, took the Flyers to the Eastern Conference finals in 2004. He’s played for SKA Saint Petersburg in Russia the past two seasons. This past year he was 29-7-5 with a 2.07 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.

His contract with the Kontinental Hockey League runs out May 1. The Flyers could be looking into some sort of buyout.

Holmgren agreed that this search was necessary because of the situation the Flyers are currently in. They had lost five straight games going into Sunday night’s game against New Jersey and had seen their playoff berth margin shrink to two points over ninth-place Atlanta.

His record was really surprising in the KHL.

29-7-5 is not too shabby.

That's correct. He player has to be signed before the traded deadline to be eligible for the playoffs.

What would happen if Boucher, and Backlund were hurt?

Would we be forced to play Duchesne over Esche/Hutton?

Here's a Q and A with Esche from back in January:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puc...urn=nhl,216558

Quote:
With the emergence of the KHL quite a few players have found a new alternative to making a living playing hockey. But most still know very little about the league that markets itself around former NHL players like Jaromir Jagr(notes), Alexander Radulov(notes), Sergei Zubov(notes) and Alexei Yashin(notes).

While it is easier to understand Russian born NHL-ers going to the KHL, it is still news when Canadian or American players decide to leave a lot behind to start their new hockey life in a foreign land. I wanted to get a North American player's opinion on the KHL and the challenges as well as positives of going to play in Russia.

more likely a close examination with the phantoms if theyre still playing which is doubtfull. he cant play for us but if backlund is going to be done then theyll need someone down there.

I know it's an unpopular position around here, but I really like Esche. He fell off a bit but he was tremendous for us in that 03-04 season. With a good defense in front of him like we have now I think he might do well. He does give up bad rebounds but he has good positioning and is good on the first save. Obviously not your first option this offseason but he would be a good candidate for a backup position or fighting it out with someone(?) for the #1 job

That description is almost the exact same way to describe Leighton. So, yeah, I agree with you actually. Wouldn't mind giving Esche a shot as long as we don't count on him being our number one when first checking him out.

I'd be very happy to see Esche return. He's a very solid goalie, and from interviews since he went to the KHL, he's matured quite a bit and doesn't seem to be the moody guy he was when he left.

You want him as our starter? Again?

We REALLY gotta move away from these x-flyer goalies

Gee, when he was the starter, they finished in the top four in the conference and went to game seven of the ECF....I'd take that.

I wonder if they've been sniffing around Sean Burke?

Not necessarily, but I like him a lot better than Brian Boucher.

As for the ex-Flyer goalie's, Boucher is really the only one we brought back so I don't know what that has to do with anything

Pretty sure Hutton could play since there's an exception or something for NCAA players.

The biggest worry I'd have with Esche as the starter is that he always seemed to get nicked up, and miss a few games here and there.

If you want to use the Emery example, Esche had better numbers in the KHL than Ray did.

As a backup fine. 100% no as a starter.

Biron was a starter also and led us to the Eastern Conference Final. Should we bring him back also? How about instead of going with average goalies (or goalies nobody else wants) we go for a legit goaltender.
