Newspaper calls out "real owners" of IHL Flint

http://www.mlive.com/generals/index...._the_real.html

Brendan Savage, who has covered the Flint Generals for quite some time, dares to publicly report what the rumor mills have been circulating since the beginning of the season.

Quote:
It’s been the worst-kept secret in the IHL this season that the Komets have been bankrolling the Generals. Multiple sources — impeccable ones — have confirmed that.

The IHL needed seven teams to survive this season — Quad City’s lease is void if there aren’t at least seven teams — so the Fort Wayne owners made sure they kept Flint alive. Heck, Komets president Michael Franke spent almost as much time worrying about Flint last summer as he did his own team.

While Brandon Bordeaux and Travis Prince were listed as the Generals owners last summer, it was Franke who was trying to hire a general manager while Prince hemmed and hawed all summer. When Prince backed out, that left Bordeaux as the sole “owner” but he was really nothing more than a figurehead for the folks in Fort Wayne.

Will the IHL shut down? The team in Dayton is supposed to be shaky, and was supposedly manipulated by the Frankes. That would mean that they were pulling the strings on 3 of 7 teams in the league at the start of this season.

I think it's over for the IHL either this season or next. There's no way they can keep making money with only a handful of teams left.

Why doesn't he just buy all the teams and run the entire league himself?

The question becomes, which league does he join? Does he go the way of Kzoo and Elmira and join the ECHL or does he go a completely opposite direction, leaving minor league hockey in favor of juniors?

My guess would be ECHL. It would be a step up so he could keep some dignity.
