Hello Los Angeles!

City of Angels,

I've decided to come down to LA to experience some playoff hockey. What hotel(s) would you suggest for me and a friend to stay at? We'd like to be either near the rink or be close to public transportation to the rink. I don't want to be spending a fortune on cabs. We'd also probably want to be somewhat near Universal Studios and some good night life. I don't need a 5-star but I don't want a hole-in-the wall either. Any ideas? Thanks...

You might want to hold off on travel reservations for a bit...

Hey Mods!

What do you guys think about changing the title of this thread and stickying it for future visitors? We seem to be getting about 1 of these a week lately. Either that or perhaps revise the title of the NHL draft thread and use it as the source.

Just a thought.

Hotels (some info from drivelikejoewho):

The Standard is very trendy hotel up the street - rooms are available around $150 a night. The O Hotel is a brand new hotel right next to the Ritz Milner. The Wilshire Grand is a pretty nice place and usually the cheapest price of the nicer hotels. The Westin-Bonaventure is fairly nice - rooms also around $150 a night. There is a Holiday Inn about 2 blocks north of Staples. There is a Marriott about 7 or 8 blocks north of Staples on Figueroa. The Millenium Biltmore is probably the nicest hotel in Downtown.

The JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton are right across the street from Staples Center but they are both sold out that weekend.

Airports:

The LAX Airport and Burbank airport are both approx. 17 miles from Staples Center.

Transportation:

Do yourself a big favor and rent a car if you want to do any sort of sightseeing or just generally want to have a better experience in LA. LA is far too spread out to get around easily or quickly using public transportation. There are plenty of places to park your car downtown.

If you insist on ignoring good advice and want the city and county to haul you around, there is a Metrolink station very close to Burbank airport that will take you downtown where you have bus, subway and light rail options. From LAX, you can take a shuttle van to the Green Line train station, take the green line east toward Norwalk, transfer to the blue line north and take that to downtown LA.

You can also take taxis but given the distance from the airport to the arena/hotels and the good likelihood you'll be stuck in traffic, it's often cheaper to rent a car.

Rent a car by all means rent a car! Los Angeles doesn't believe in public transportation.

Ok Find something near the red line/ subway. It goes to Staples and to Universal Studios, as well as other tourist spots. La Live is across from Staples. Hollywood & Highland and the Sunset strip are on/near the Red line as well. Find a hotel and call and ask how far from the subway. You don't want to take the bus.

Don't know your price range but 111.00
There are cheaper places but this fight much of our needs.

Best thing to do is rent a car with a GPS. Los Angeles is too big of a city.

Yes, I'll be renting a car, but there are occasions when I won't want to drive the car back to the hotel. For example, after a "few" pops at the game the last thing I want to worry about is trying to navigate that rented car back to my hotel in a strange city...

Maybe Heidi Androl can be the designated driver.

I was born here and I love it. Just certain places can be a pain, i.e. Hollywood.

I hate how compartmentalized this city is.

If I am touring L.A., I would not want to waste half of my vacation riding on or waiting for public transportation.

It is WELL worth it to rent a car.

I disagree, but that's OK. I see how one could see things opposite of I.

It really depends on what you mean by compartmentalized.
