11 Forwards, 7 Defensemen.

I was reading the PGT tonight and I noticed a few "Gill vs Bergeron" comments. I also read some "Bergeron has screwed the bottom 6" comments. What we have are 2 specialists. One PP specialist and one PP/5v3 specialist.

What I don't understand is why we don't play 7 D... is Martin too lazy to figure out which top 6 forward is on his game on any given night and double shift him on the 4th?

IMO, this issue comes down to 1 thing: The situation on the ice.
If we're on the PP, Bergy plays.
If we're on the PK, Gill plays.
Split their 5v5 time.
Double shift the hottest forward top 6 forward on the 4th line.

Does anyone else see the incredible simplicity in this plan or have I completely lost my mind?

Goodnight Montreal, and good luck.

I'd give Gill the regular shift 5 on 5 and PK and play Bergeron on the PP and the rare occasion 5 on 5 to give one of the D's a rest.

JM hasn't figured out who the forwards are on the team, period.

Our bottom 6 was winning us games when we went through our 6 game winning streak but now Metro is done for the season and SK is hurting so we're back to sucking in the bottom 6.

It doesn't help that adding Bergeron has just made our bottom 6 that much more wussy on the boards. He adds nothing except a big shot.

What should be happening:

Cammy-Pleks-AK
Pouliot-Gomez-Gionta
Moen-Moore-Lappy
Bergeron - Darche

Markov-OB
Spacek-Subban
Hamrlik-Gorges
Gill

Basically, we play the rest of the year with three set lines & 7 D.
With Metro & SK out, the 4th line is a mess again but that's just the way it is.

PP: Markov-Bergeron then Spacek-Subban

That gives us two solid PP duos. Spacek can be a poor-man's Markov & set'em up. He's good at that. He did that for Bergeron when Markov was out let's not forget. They were a good duo. In fact they were a better duo than Markov-MAB because Marky likes to roam & sneak back door. Spacek tends to stay put & looked for MAB more.

PK: Gill-Gorges are the dynamic duo here.

This will give Subban an opportunity to play some minutes in the NHL, give the Habs a fleet-footed defenceman who can carry the puck out of his own zone & give us 2 PP pairings while not hurting the Penalty Kill at all.

How can we improve offense by having more d-men sitting on the bench.
Good defencemen are important to any offense because they start the transition game, can control the neutral zone & make smart plays at the blue line to keep possession of the puck in the offensive zone. Hamrlik, OB, Gill & Gorges are absolutely useless at supporting our offense. Spacek isn't much better.

Because there is no threat other than Markov teams can back off our D-men & create a tight box down low. Our forwards are often out-numbered 3-2 or even worse 3-1.

Buffalo will let our defensemen shoot all night. They never cover the points unless Markov is out there. Everything is about taking away time & space down low. It's crazy how much time & space they give our D-men yet none of them, outside of Markov, is able to use it effectively. That means when we do get the puck in the offensive zone it's a 3-on-5 battle. Our 3 forwards against all 5 of their guys.

Until we get another respectable offensive defensemen to help spread out the opposition in the offensive zone we will be a poor offensive team.
