1. Drew Doughty, D, Los Angeles
When players are this good, ranking them really comes down to splitting hairs. And in this case we decided that finding a dominant defenseman like the 20-year-old Canadian Olympian is harder to do than finding a dominant forward. So Doughty gets the nod over Toews…but just barely.
Drew is definitely unreal. But Toews and Kane above Stamkos. No way. Stamkos is already better then Kane and Toews.
That was my first thought as well, but after a bit of thought I can kinda see where the writer is coming from. There's a difference between scoring a bunch of goals on a weak team, like Stamkos and leading a young team to a divisional title like Kane and Stamkos. Kane is ridiculously creative and dynamic in the offensive zone and the Toews is a superior two-way player and leader. Eventually teams will learn to play Stamkos' one-timer on the power play. They're all pretty young though and it wouldn't surprise me if Stamkos becomes the best of the three.
