I'm not going to another game as long as Sather is running the team. If everyone else would take that step we'd have a new GM. Unfortunately, people are sheep and continue to buy a crap product.

When someone sells you garbage over and over it's your fault, not theirs. The fans are the problem. Stop buying the product, and the product is forced to make changes to improve.

Mike,

I was at the Mausoleum last night with Bobby Bassett and his friends Ryan Antonik and Eric Mauer. Hard to believe but I was hoping the Fish would beat the Rangers so the "Fire Sather" chants would reign down from the Rafters in Nassau.

Watching the Tampa/Pens game on VS. Deb Placey was with Engblom and the other stiff. They were speculating on which coaches and GM's would be "replaced" if their team failed to make the playoffs.

Her words, to paraphrase, was that Sather would be moved up rather then fired and Messier potentially taking Sather's place. Can Keenan be far behind?

Potvin is probably giggling to himself on the show with his smug smartass know it all remarks he makes. God knows if there is one former player who would love nothing more than to see this franchise go bankrupt its him. Listening to him on NHL Live everyday if he agrees with you he will suck you off so hard for backing him up on something, but if he doesn't he will stop at nothing to make you look like an idiot. Regardless of how valid a point someone brings up Potvin hates it when someone else is right.

As for the Keenan/Messier idea... oh god no

Rivals fans chanting that a player sucks, every game for more than 30 years, tends to do strange things to people

Sather

I think that this is an excellent time to resurrect this thread.

Clearly, I'm not happy that we did not make the playoffs. I am however happy that this may be the end for Sather. We can argue all year about who should have gone for us in the shootout. But the bottom line is this:
It is the mismanagement of this team and this team's cap that has us finish in 9th!

The Flyers have also mismanaged their team by not finding a solid #1 goalie. However, if we want to even compare ourselves to a flawed team like the Flyers, it is very clear that we are even MORE flawed. While our goalie position is set, we are completely mismanaged at forward and at D...so much so that no goalie, not Lundqvist , not Roy, not Hasek, not Brodeur, would be able to get this team into the playoffs!

So let's , for the fun of it, compare our forwards and D to the Flyers:

Top 6 Forwards (cap hit):
Flyers
Richards - 62 points - $5.75
Carter - 61 points (in just 74 games) - $5
Gagne - 40 points(in just 58 games) so lets use 55 if he played a full season - $5.25
Briere - 53 points - $6.5
Giroux - 47 points - $.821
Hartnell - 44 points - $4.2

Total Points: 322
Total Cap hit: about $27.5

Rangers
Gaborik - 86 points - $7.5
Prospal - 58 points - $1.15
Jokinen - 50 points - $5.25
Dubinsky - 44 points - $1.85
Callahan - 37 points - $2.3
Drury - 32 points - $7.05
Total Points: 307 points
Total Cap hit: about $25

The difference in Total Points here is not huge but it exists. The main difference you will notice is how spread out the scoring is for the Flyers...while the Rangers have one big star player in Gaborik and nothing else! You will also notice that Drury, our 6th best forward, with his 32 points, is making $7 mill, while Hartnell, Flyers 6th best forward, with 44 points, makes only $4.2 mill. That difference of $3 mill is huge in the NHL these days. You are also not going to go far in the playoffs or even in the regular season with only one top scorer...Caps have Ovechkin and Semin, Pitt has Crosby and Malkin and even Philly has a nice combo of Richards and Carter.

Top 6 Dmen(cap hit):
Flyers:
Pronger - 55 points - $6.25
Timonen - 39 points - $6.33
Carle - 35 points - $3.43
Coburn - 19 points - $1.3
Bartulis - 9 points (in just 53 games) so lets say 15 points in a full season-$.51
Krajicek - 3 points (in 50 games) so say 5 points in a full season - $.516
Total points: 160 points
Total cap hit: about $18.5

Rangers:
Del Zotto - 37 points - $1.087
Staal - 27 points - $.826
Girardi - 24 points - $1.55
Rozsival - 23 points - $5
Gilroy - 15 points - $1.75
Redden - 14 points - $6.5
Total points: 140
Total cap hit: about $18

About the same cap hit. Main difference is in points, difference of 20 points! Then of course you see Redden making $6.5 mill to put up 14 points as our 5th best dman while Bartulis is making $.51 mill as the Flyers's 5th best dman and he would have put up about the same total points in a full season. This is a difference of $6 mill!

Conclusion:
No team can go far in the playoffs with just a top goalie and 1 top goal scorer! You need a lot more depth than that. Even if we made the playoffs, a team like the Caps would have focused on Gaborik and we would have lost in 4 games.

Cap - Drury should be making about $$4-$5 mill less right now, Redden should be making about $5 mill less right now. That is about $9-$10 mill that we could have easily invested in another top forward who could put up 60-80 points! We could have also improved our D, but I think we are ok in that area once we manage to get rid of Redden at some point.

Sather - He HAS TO be fired. The cap was his to manage, and he did anything but.

Sure. The Jagr teams were the same. A one-line team and a really good goalie can get you into the second round, and that's about it.
