Pretty cool story out of Manchester

wonder how often something like this happens:
"With the decision to have Jonathan Bernier fly back to L.A. with the Kings (where he will start Thursday), it left the Monarchs without a backup goaltender for Jeff Zatkoff, scheduled to play against Lowell tonight in Lowell in a tight playoff race.

So, the Monarchs sign some kid who isn't even listed on hockeydb.

Matt Lopes was signed to sit on the bench and backup Zatkoff. He was a local 25 year old who hadn't played a game of hockey this season and at last check was 0-13 for his local college. He had about an hour of practice time.

So what happens?

Jeff Zatkoff gives up 2 goals on the first 3 shots, then gets hurt and can't continue.

Lopes is forced to come in, the Monarchs score four straight goals and Lopes stops 42 of 43 shots to win the game for the Monarchs. "

Actually that 0-13 was from the 05/06 season. Last year has was 11-5-0... "2008-09 Season: Played in 990 minutes through 17 games with the Gustavus Adolphus College men’s hockey team…Collected a record of 11-5-0 with a 2.24 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage in those 17 regular season games…Picked up a 4-1-0 record, a 1.95 goals-against-average and a .928 save percentage in five playoff games as Gustavus won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s post-season tournament…Earned all-conference honorable mention…Named league Player of the Week on March 9."

Still pretty cool though.

That's amazing. Lopes may one day be as good as Rick Knickle...

The AHL is awesome, crazy stuff like this can happen. He's basically a 25 year old playing division III hockey.

I agree, great story. Maybe Bernier won't have a job anymore when he goes Back (I'll add the so everyone knows I was kidding and doesn't bite my head off )

You know that guy will have a great story to tell his kids later.

"So I was sitting at home having a beer, still trying to forget that 0-13 season a few years back, and guess who called..."

Obviously, DL is way ahead of the curve, scouting and signing prospects from a previously hidden hockey powerhouse: Gustavus Adolphus College.

Poor Lopes, here yesterday and he'll be released tomorrow. Hopefully the Monarchs will give the guy his jersey when he leaves.

Thanks for the great game last night kid
