It sucks that he's ready to move on when his value is lower now. No way we get an equivalent package of a Jeff Carter, a 1st round pick and a prospect for Kaberle anymore
Burke wouldn't ask Kaberle to waive his NTC but he would ask Wilson to lean on Kaberle to try and get him to want to move. Unfortunately it took to long and Kaberle is now starting to go public that he wants out right at the worst time when his NTC actually expires.
It probably won't effect his value that much but one year remaining on the contract reduces his value and knowing he wants out reduces his value.
The quiet war between Tomas Kaberle and Ron Wilson marches towards a likely divorce with the coach firing what may have been the final shots at the longest-serving of all Maple Leafs players.
There will not necessarily be any kind of happy ending for Kaberle in Toronto.
The Blue Jackets need D, and will have the 6-9 pick. Do the Leafs trade Kabs for the CBJ 1st round pick, and Filatov?
This may be the best offer Toronto receives.
I don't think they get that offer.
They've received 11 years of service from Tomas out of an 8th. round pick.
The Leafs have been well served and are owed nothing from Kaberle.
Leafs should be happy if they get anything for Kaberle, he's given more to the Leafs than RW ever will.

He's a scout's dream in the way he prepares himself and plays an unselfish game, making smart decisions with the puck. With his bloodlines, he certainly understands what it will take to make it at the next level.
Kaberle to Anaheim for 12th overall and Holland or is that too much?

why would the jackets do that? although i would do it in a second. filatov would probably like playing in our run and gun system and him and kadri would look pretty snazzy. you would think we would need to throw something in as well. i cant see the jackets trading away a pick in the 5-10 range for just kaberle even if he resigned.

The CBJ are getting desperate, and NEED help on the blueline. They need to make some kind of splash in the off season to push ticket sales. Fans are tired of building for the future, and hearing about the organization losing $. Season ticket holders are starting drop. Filatov quit on the team, and may not be welcomed back.
They had great momentum after making the playoffs last year, followed by an under performing year. The young players (Russell, Vorachek, Brassard) continue to improve, and Nash needs more help.
I think it's clear that Burke requires everyone to play a physical game, even the bare minimum of physicality. The days of skill guys not hitting is long gone, everyone hits, everyone has to play physical. Kaberle is stuck in a bygone era in which he refuses to engage physically, play hard in his own end, and it costs the team. Wendel Clark said it himself, the biggest difference between his era and the current one is that everyone, including the superstars, hits and can skate.
You can go and blame his line mates for his piss poor +/-, but you can see his lack of commitment to play D. If I were his coach telling him to play physical, work his own end and he ignored me, I'd call him out too. D-man who gets first PP unit minutes, opens the season on fire, disappears, has the worst +/- on the team, and people blame the coach. love it.
kessel says hi!
i dont think there are any conspiracy theories going on with kabs i think he is just in a bit of a slump. a reduction in icetime probably doesnt help, not having a steady defensive partner doesnt help, and playing for a losing team again probably doesnt help.
based on every move burke has made i have no doubt that kabs is as good as gone irrespective of what comes out of burkes mouth. just cause he doesnt bash him to the media ala the mccabe situation doesnt mean he doesnt have every intention of trading the guy.
bottom line, whatever team kabs is traded too is going to have quit the treat watching his skating and breakout pass

They may be putting this year on Mason though. He's played pretty terribly - it wouldn't surprise me to see Columbus do nothing in the off-season in hopes that Mason will play better next year and the team will be fine.

Yeah they need to compete but they weren't close enough to be mortgaging the future. I could see them trying to move Filitov's rights but not the pick. At least not both.

I hate Filatov, but I would still do this deal, for the simple fact that it is 2 boom or busts, not just 1.
Filatov is a whiner but maybe being traded might be the kick in the ass he needs to realize that theres more to being a pro then just goal sucking.
CBJ might want more for this, I would be willing to also give a mid level prospect, just because were also receiving a top 10 pick.
What the hey does that mean? What are you suggesting Ulf, we just let Kabs play out the string and walk in a year?
No trade him for the best return that makes everyone happy.
As a matter of fact if you make Kaberle happy you probably get a better return.
Wouldn't be unusual for there to be conditions on the trade, ex. another pick if he re-signs with the team traded to. So the vendetta by some posters is short sighted, but vendetta's usually are not well thought out and reasoned, but just irrational thoughts of simple minds. (Not referring to you obviously)

And its that attitude that got us nothing for Mats, and if it happens with Kaberle its only holding the team bck in the long term. We do need the assets.

Assets are retired.
Happens all the time.
Sometimes the bigger picture is served by showing loyalty to employees rather than tossing them aside with future candidates looking over options.

When we can afford to be like that great, but your talking about a team that hasn't won a cup in 40+ years. I think if assets are retired for the leafs, then I see it as a failure.
Agreed....I hate everything about Filatov, but Kulie could show this kid the meaning of hard work....And what it takes to be a pro in this league.
I don't think the original proposal would get it done from CBJ POV...
Filatov
CBJ 1st 2010
For
Kaberle +
Columbus gives up basically 2 pseudo-lottery picks for Kaberle - this doesn't happen. I would love to get their first pick this year and draft Niederreiter though - a top-six left wing of him and Kulemin is classy.

Wilson act wearing thin on veteran Kaberle April 1, 2010
A report in a Toronto newspaper suggests Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle has "had enough" of coach Ron Wilson's lack of respect for his players.
The Toronto Sun quoted an unnamed source saying Kaberle, the longest-serving Leaf now in his 11th season, is "at his wit's end" with the second-year coach and that Kaberle is sure to be dealt in the off-season.
Kaberle has one year remaining on a contract that includes a no-trade clause, but the Leafs have window to deal him because the team failed to make the playoffs.
Wilson is not shy about directing criticism, often with a trace of sarcasm, at players and the article points to comments Wilson made following Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Atlanta that officially eliminated the team from the post-season. Wilson called out unnamed defencemen with poor plus-minus ratings that made it easy to identify the culprits as Kaberle and Francois Beauchemin. Kaberle is minus-16 on the season and Beauchemin is minus-15.
Burke on HC @ Noon Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke will join Daren Millard and Doug MacLean at 1:05 p.m. ET to discuss another season of his club finishing out of the playoffs. Burke will also talk about the time he spent in Afghanistan last week, whereby former NHLers visited the troops. Watch HC@Noon on Rogers Sportsnet or listen at the Fan590.
"We talk about how solid our defence is and how well we're playing and we've still got guys who are minus-16 or whatever," the article quotes Wilson as saying. "They're supposed to be guys who get the job done defensively and they haven't improved their plus-minus over the past month when just about everybody else has."
At the NHL trade deadline on March 3, Kaberle gave GM Brian Burke a short list of teams to which he would agree to be traded but a deal could not be made.
