Any chance we can sign everyone ?

What do you think ?

Say we resign Pleks at 5 mils, is there any way we can keep both goalies?

Most of our Top 6 is alredy signed (Pouilot is most likely getting a raise, though !) I put him at 1.5M

Top 6 = around 28.1M

The bottom 6 is a bit trickyer. The only players signed right now are Moen and Patches. At 1.5 and .9 M respectively. The Laraque experiment is still on the books, also (1.5M).
4 M for 2 bottom 6 players. We still need 4 of those, which will hopefully all sign or be called up for around 1M each.

Bottom 6 = Minimum 8 M

Our D is signed, though we are missing the last player of this group. Be it Bergeron or Subban or Weber, he should't be payed more than a million or so.

Defence = 20.5 M or so

Which gives us a total of around 57 M, the cap hit for next year being thought to become 57.7 M

So we have a problem.

As much as I like Hamerlik, his contract is the kind of salary we need to shed to get where we want to be. And as much as I like Price, he might need to be part of a deal to get us rid of Hamerlik for a good young defenceman..

Anyways, good luck, Gauthier !

Spacek or Hamrlik will be traded for a fourth round pick

Why sign both goalies, Halak will ask for more than Price this summer, TRADE HALAK! His stick is high and Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Detroit, Calgary, San Jose and many others will be looking for goaltending youth and upgrades after this season.

I say trade Halak and the right to Plekanec and sign Marleau for cheap and bring Sanford back to backup Price, make Price the #1 and voila!

We can fit everyone under the cap and upgrade our defense that way.

I expect that as well, though we'll still need a top 4 D after such a trade.
That won't open up the 4 M or so we would need to sign the goalies.

or that the HAbs would want Marleau.

Look up over-rated... you'll see Marleau.

Put Joe Thornton aside anyone and they will be high on the point list.

I don't think we'd need to sign or trade for another defenceman after Hamrlik/Spacek departure.

Markov - Gorges
Subban - (Hamrlik or Spacek)
O'Byrne - Gill
Weber

Is decent to me

The whole point about the off season is to fix mistakes and holes in your core. With Subban on the Rise, and O'Byrne more matured, we would want a more solid #2 dman, and try to package Hamrlik for a 2nd this year

Thing is, as a team expected to make the playoffs, you can't really EXPECT a rookie defencemen to make the team.
If it does happen that Subban is ready for the big game, great! Let him have Gill's spot if you want !
But you got to have a plan A.

According to Gary320, the answer is once again Joe Thornton if you look up-high.

We have to find a way to deal Hamrlik even though I like the guy but his 5.5 mil is too much for us. If we can use that to sign both Price and Halak, I would be all for it.

Then we can talk about UFA.

Worst case scnario IMO is if we can't deal away one of Hamrlik/Spacek and are forced to buy out Hamrlik. Replace him with Weber and we save nearly 3M in cap space.

I really don't see why Montreal couldn't sign both goalies.

Most teams spend between $5-7 million on goalies and I don't see why the Habs couldn't split that amount among the 2 we currently have. They're both RFA and not UFA and so probably won't get the $4+ million they'd probably get on the market. Besides, neither goalie is the type to sit out a year either.

Another added benefit is that if you sign them to a smaller contract, they're worth more in a trade.

All this is for not as Halak will most likely be dealt before the draft anyway, imo.

I love how we are really close to the cap, we can't even sign our own players, and someone brings up the wonderful idea of signing Marleau..

Now that I know the cap will be going up or at least not going down, I think the only players we'll lose are Metropolit and Bergeron and maybe one more periphery player. We'll keep the goalies (4M) total, Plekanec (5m) Darche, Pyatt, Pouliot, Sergei, Lapierre and hopefully Moore. If one of Darche, Pyatt, Sergei, or Lapierre cry about only making 800K a year, we'll just let em walk.

If we sign Moore, we'll probably have to let go of one of Lapierre or Sergei.
I'll bet anyone good money that we won't re-sign Metro or Bergeron. Moore is the younger better version of Metro, and MAB is just not necessary enough to keep to sacrifice another player.

Pick three out of this bunch: Marleau, Lecavalier, Colby Armstrong, Latendresse, Seidenberg, Volchenkov, Jack Johnson and Kovalchuk.

and then dump three from this bunch: SK, AK, Moore, Pyatt, Lapierre, Spacek and Mara.

Budget is done.

The problem with that is you're stuck with your plan A because your plan A is a living being protected by a collective bargaining agreement that you signed to a contract worth millions of dollars. And people generally tend to try to not throw a million dollar or more into a fire.

Well, that was the point I was trying to make: we DON'T have the 4M to sign both goalies.

If we end up trading a goalie to save cap space, we'll have to bring a veteran backup because neither Price or Halak have proven they can play more than 40-50 games in a season.

Since such a backup would probably cost almost as much as the guy we traded to alleviate our cap problems it doesn't really make sense to trade a goalie for that reason in the first place.

have you ever thought maybe Carey Price and Jaroslav don't want to be here together..

they both want to be a starter..

we can only keep one.

Only 1 wants to stay.
