The Vanderbeek Era: High Times For Hockey in Jersey

A good read that puts things into a bit of perspective, some things that some of us tend to forget as a season of highs and lows goes along

A decent article, though clearly not written by a hockey fan given the various perception errors. (e.g. the Devils were a role model franchise long before JVDB entered the picture, and hockey was not at an all-time low in the US in 2004 despite the lockout etc..)

Big Mark Fraser, two-way speed demon Tyler Eckford, and first-round draft pick Matt Corrente are reminiscent of the Devil’s holy trinity of Ken Daneyko, Scott Niedermayer, and Scott Stevens. These three promising rookies are not afraid to pull the trigger in the offensive zone, with each having at least a shot on goal in their NHL debuts. Each of these young blueliners has been with the Devils for periods during the season.

Heh. I'm not holding my breath for him to tally his first as a pro anytime soon considering he passed up his best chance to do so when he passed to Zajac who was already covered.

Didn't even see this thread until now.

I've met Mr. Vanderbeek twice now and he's a really really nice man for someone of his stature. He is genuinely interested in what people have to say or so it seems that way. I plan on working for the them when I graduate.

seriously. When I was at the Mike Mattau manclub meetings, i don't believe I ever heard "shutdown defenseman" used. They know the deal.
