ESPN Pierre LeBrun,Eric Duhatschek and James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail
LeBrun reported Glen Sather is reaching the end of his contract and which is not a small thing considering how much money Sather makes. More speculation/discussion on Sather's future this season than previous seasons.
Duhatschek feels Messier will receive more responsibility and then take over.
LeBrun feels Sather will be phased out
They discussed the Flames situation. LeBrun pointed out the Rangers and Flames need a #1 center. Both teams tried Olli Jokinen and he wasn't the answer.
Messier named Doug Risebrough as his top lieutenant for the Canadian management team. Perhaps Messier becomes the GM this summer and Risebrough is hired as his right hand. An experienced NHL exec. VP of Hockey Operations. Risebrough was Sather's #2 in Edmonton when Edmonton became a playoff team in the late 1990's.
Replace Schoenfeld with Messier as AGM and then Messier takes over next summer.
I really see Sather stepping down after either this season or next, remaining has President of the organization, with Messier stepping in as GM. Clark would handle the draft and Sather would act in a "behind closed doors" advisory role in trades.
Just need someone to help out with FA signings lol.
Sather is a gift that keeps on giving. He'll step down and Messier will take over. Thanks a lot, Sather. The sooner you are gone from this organization for good the better.

I know you're kidding, but if Sather does end up getting let go or stepping down, how can anyone be sure that the Fire Sather rally that most considered to be a failure didn't play a role?

There are so many better options out there. Some in the organization that never played for the team. Why settle for a totally unexperienced candidate?

Isnt that how normal teams do business??? OOOhhhh, thats right - the Rangers are the lazy, take the easy way out nepotists. I see. Well then it makes sense then not to take the time to correctly fill the most critical position of management. I guess they like being the laughing stock of the league. That must be it. But hey, we still have the "World's most famous arena" right?
I think the biggest cause for concern is naming Mess as GM is such an obvious, simple, expected, style over substance move. Which is typical Garden.
Yeah, I think this is exactly why I have a bad feeling about it. Messier has no real front office experience, or at least not enough that I'd be comfortable with him jumping straight in. Like you said, it smacks of wanting to make a splash or be stylish, and I worry that would exactly be Messier's style of GMing. Roll the dice! etc

As many mistakes as Sather has made there are definitely worse GMs than him out there. IT's incredibly shortsighted to think there's no way things could get worse

Messier is better press than if they went out and got a guy from Detroit or Anaheim or Pittsburgh or Washington.
We need a smart hockey mind making smart hockey decisions.
An executive position consists of both hockey and business. Messier could certainly play the game, but hes inexperienced in just about every other aspect of being a general manager/team executive.
Hiring Messier as the GM would just be another over PR attempt by the Garden. Incredibly lazy, and incredibly predictable.

I'd give him a shot. He was always a fierce competitor and a very good leader. All those rings and being the 2nd all time scoring leader in the history of the game don't translate into proven GM, but they get you a shot.
He has GODLIKE status in NY. He will not want to tarnish this with a ****** GM performance.
I believe he will put his all into making this team the best in the NHL

this team is in the position it is in primarily due to the incompitance in handeling the buisenss end of this sport
And do you not think that as GM Messier will have not others around him that can advise on all those other things?
I think the point people are trying to make for Messier is that he has the hockey brain, knows what it takes to build a good team and has a sense on what players would be a good fit for a team. All the other things can be learned in time, with help from others in the organization.

Of course hell put his all into it. Hes just not the right guy for the job IMO. Hes not GM material in my eyes.

The GM is the one who puts a team together, makes roster decisions, trades, decides what players are signed.
They can have assistants, and advisory staffs to help them with cap management and business.
Hockey decisions need to be made by a hockey mind.
As far as relationships with other GM's and agents, that all goes with how sociable a person is.
While I don't know if Messier would be a fantastic GM, he certainly is a hockey mind, he is well respected in the tight knit hockey community.
Can he manage a salary cap? I don't know, but again, that's what a staff is for.
You can not allow a team to be in the hands of a business shark. They don't care about anything but how much net gain they make at the end of the year.
You want a healthy hockey franchise, you need a hockey guy, making hockey decisions in charge.
Having a guy who can do it all would be great. But its not realistic.
I'd rather the guy in charge be a hcokey guy first, business man second.
I just really don't want this team continuing to take the "business" wall-street approach, and instead focus on hockey. Which is what it is, a hockey team.
