The only part of the Alberts deal that may hurt is that he's still under contract next year. Begs the question, if a UFA bottom 6 is worth a 3rd round pick, does an extra year on the contract mean he's worth more or less? You would think more.

Gillis doesn't seem to do that well paying sticker price for grinders & bottom 6 players - its when he gets them at a deep discount (eg. Glass, Wellwood, Rome, Raycroft) that he comes out looking like a bandit.

Its all about expectations - when you pay little, you expect little so the downside is negligible - its all upside. When you pay full retail, you expect more so there's more downside and psychologically, not much upside....

Anyway, jury is still out on Alberts - LET'S SEE HOW HE DOES IN THE REAL SEASON.

Alberts would have been fine in the pre-lockout NHL.

The game today requires mobile d-men who can move the puck.

Really? I guess I imagined the 41 fights in last years playoffs?

I'll admit he's not the most talented guy in the world, but he will fit in perfectly once he gets used for what he is, a bottom pairing defenseman. If we ever get healthy and he goes down to the #6 slot on D, he will be fine.
Poor logic. He was bottom pairing until the most recent injuries and he wasn't fine. In fact, he didn't crack the roster many nights.

Considering he's due for a big pay raise despite not being good enough to crack the top 6 on a good team, it looks like we did Carolina a favour by taking him on. I'd have to say less value.

Well - he started out terrible, but he has improved as he is learning AV's system a bit. I'm hoping they saw some talent in there that they can develop - wouldn't it be nice to have a big effective Defenseman who hits?

Considering people were asking for O'Brien's head and he's actually turned into a pretty decent defender, I think we can give Alberts a bit of time to figure out our game. They've almost played the same number of games(AB, 338 - SOB, 299).
