World Championships

seeing as Tampa most likely will not make the playoffs Mark Messier must be smiling.

Vinny, Marty, Stammer are sure to get invites. What about throwing Downie into the mix as well? He has done a lot for Hockey Canada in the past (2 world juniors - under 18 ect.) I would really like to see Downz get a invite and showcase his skills on the international level again.

I think we could see Downs there as a 3rd liner. He's got the 20-200 mark already. He's proven he can score and be a banger. I think it would be awesome to see 4 Lightning forwards on Team Canada but I don't think it will happen. Malone, if fully healthy, will be on Team USA, IMO. Pretty much everyone else who was in the Olympics will be invited to their teams. Whether the accept or not is a different story.

Part me would love to see Marty and Steven not going because of the olympic snub, but they probably don't feel that way.

Vinny, who knows he might want to stay home to rest and be with his baby.

Tampa Bay Lightning players Steven Stamkos and Steve Downie could be headed to the world championship May 7-23 in Germany. Teammate Marty St. Louis said he has declined.

Team Canada general manger Mark Messier was in town for Friday's game with th Rangers. Nothing has been formally announced, or finalized but Stamkos said, "I'd like to head over and bring home a gold."

Downie, too, said, "I'd like to play."
I don't blame Marty for declining.

Marty needs the rest, good for him for declining. As far as Bolts in the WC.. do you think Hedman and Ohlund would make team Sweden?

Don't blame Marty a bit. Can use the time off and be with his family.

Harju is at the Sweden's camp right now, and Karsums, Ramo, and Koshechkin are all done with their seasons in the KHL too. They all have played for their countries in the past.

Not sure about Malone only cause of the injury, I would rather him take the time off to recover

The Downie will kill for his country.

He'd go, but like with Vancouver, probably wouldn't play.
Kiprusoff - Flames (very unlikely to make playoffs)
Backstrom - Wild (eliminated from playoffs)
Niittyymmaakkii - Liigghtning (eliminated from playoffs)

No one's said Meszaros with Slovakia yet. Since the team over performed earlier this year, I'd think they'd want to keep as much of that team together as they can. Maybe we'll see Jaroslav Janus as their third goalie. Probably not though.

No briner for Marty to play in the World Championships. This should be a tournament for younger guys to gain international experience. Marty owes Hockey Canada nothing, he has paid his dues.

Go Downie

According to Meszaros´s dad there isn´t much chance that the Bolts would let Andrej play cuz he is already playing with injury. Janus won´t be even in the pre-WHC trainign cuz of his injury. Though Peter Bondra has been watching Mihalik and Panik in the AHL.

As the World Cup approaches it sounds like the Lightning may have a number of players heading to Germany for the tournament. Steven Stamkos and Steve Downie are expected to represent Canada while Victor Hedman may play for his native Sweden. There are also some whispers about one or two defensemen from the Bolts being named to Team USA. My guess would be Mike Lundin and/or Matt Smaby, both Minnesota natives.

Vladimír Mihálik and Richard Pánik will take part in Slovak NT camp and two games against Czech republic this week.

As for Meszaros:
"I feel good physically, I have some smaller injuries, so we´ll see. Everything will depend on the team´s decision, we have health tests on Monday. I don´t want to say anything too early. I have a long season behind me, I didn´t have any break during it. However I´m feeling good and I´ve played even more games during a season in the past."

Sounds like Victor Hedman will play for Sweden in the World Championships. Mike Lundin at least being considered for USA.
