So this is time for...

Tomas Plekanec. Over the last few games I think we all started to question if resigning him to a multi-year contract would be a wise deal. In my opinion he's by far our best forward overall but he plays so soft. I think these playoffs will really show us what he's got. He's our leading scorer and he's gotta make an impact in playoffs for once.

Every game for Plekanec will be the biggest of his life. I'll be watching closely!

He has 4 goals in his last eight games...

And 0 assists in those games.

One goal was an empty netter and 2 were perfect passes from AK46 that all Plekanec had to do was tap them in. He's had a great year but since the Olympic break he hasn't been good. Plekanec was awesome in his first playoffs against Carolina so hopefully he plays like he did then and not like he has in his last couple playoffs.

And he's -4 in his last two games, since you're trying to make a point.

Plekanec has had a good season overall, and yeah, I read somewhere (IIRC) he has 30 points in his last 43 games, which is decent but not enough. Gomez, on the other hand, is up around a PPG...

I think his "slump" is a good thing...he'll cost us less, and not some ridiculous amount. He barely passed his career high this season for points, so I'm sure his price is lower now than it would have been a few months ago.

Hasn't he been playing through a hip injury the last few games?

Yes, he's soft.

He also has 70 points.
We all want more grit and size with the Habs but to win games you need players who will produce offensively. He has 70 points and is also an excellent defensive forward that we use in any pressure situation.

I'd never pay 5-6 millions a year for him, but a 4 to 4.5 cap hit would be reasonable.

0 assist.. How many goals do his linemates have?
Stop question him when we know his linemates are having a hard time. Ya 70 points this year and it's time to question him... Our best defensive forward...

Please, you people are out of your minds.

Do you honestly think he's been good lately? He's played awesome for us this year and I think he'll step it up in the playoffs but you can't possibly think he's been playing well for us this last little while. His linemates haven't been good either but some of the blame has to go to Plekanec too.

4 years 18M. In 4 years we will have Gomez,Cammy,Gionta, and Pleks of the books.

IIRC Malkin comes of the books in 4 years

If he wants too much it's not worth it. he's a great player but if we sign him we have 2 med-small centres locked up, and we all know how badly we want that big impact centre.

I remember when he went for an open ice hipcheck with 2 seconds left in the game. He missed and I laughed

well

Ak is Ak...
and Cammy is not the same since coming back from injury
so when Cammy will score again, Plek will shine again

He can't do it all by himself!

That's something Gauthier has to think about. Plekanec is a great 2 way player, but he's an escapist when the game gets tough and physical. That's his only knock as a player, if it wouldn't be the case he's be one of the elite centers in this league.

do you know why that kind of solution isn't seen in the NHL? I imagine it's because of the way our CBA is worded or because of some differences in how our cap system works...

as I understand it, sign and trade happens generally because teams up near the cap limit can't take on new players without shedding salary at the same time, so the sign and trade allows for a team with a player they aren't able to keep to still get assets for him, while a team looking to add but without cap space can make it happen by sending $$ the other way...

in any case, with Pleks, this playoffs is definitely a key one for him, at least as far as we are concerned.

I still think that he's done enough this year to be able to find a team that will be motivated to offer him more than we will as a UFA (especially given the lack of quality C's available on July 1st).

If he plays well during the playoffs, I'm sure he and his agent will be angling for a close-to-market contract, which will undoubtably go in the 5.5M$ range (if not more).

If he plays poorly, it would certainly have the potential to make the negotiations a little easier on our side, if he is indeed highly motivated to stay with the Habs and sign for less than he'll be offered on July 1st.

I'd be fine with a 3-year ~5.25M$ deal... less is of course better, but realistically I think that's reasonable for both sides. We get him at less than he'll get offered elsewhere, he gets a nice raise and a short enough term that if he continues to improve (which I expect), he's in line for another substantial raise in just a few years.

it would make dumping Spacek and/or replacing Hamrlik with a cheaper option much more important.
