Rate my selections for my hockey pool

I am involved in a 13 team, 10 player straight points playoff pool. It is a snake format, and I had the 10th pick. These are the players I snagged:

1. H. Zetterburg (Det)
2. P. Datsyuk (Det)
3. B. Rafalski (Det)
4. V. Fillipula (Det)
5. N. Kronwall (Det)
6. E. Fehr (Was)
7. J. Chimera (Was)
8. S. Gomez (Mtl)
9. J. Arnott (Nas)
10. C. Stewart (Col)

Playoff pools are moreso about predicting the winner rather than getting the best players. It's a wise strategy in my opinion to stock up on one team.

The East is unpredictable, but if I would a went Chicago & Vancouver with Western picks.

Wiser to stock up on 2 teams, 1 from the east 1 from the west

The way I saw the west shaping up was:

1. S.J over 8. Colorado
2. Chicago over 7. Nashville
3. Vancouver over 6. L.A.
5. Detroit over 4. Phoenix

That would have had Vancouver and Chicago in the 2nd round (see Chi coming out on top to take on Detroit)

Either you win or finish last. Which is all that matters no?

Not sure I would bet the house on Det, but likely a safe bet to win a round or two. I hope the Coyotes win, but goodluck.

If Det makes the final you should have the pool locked up.

Well, it's a choice I always make in pools as well, to stick with maily one team and bet the house on them. Although, Detroit wouldn't be a team I'd put my money with, but that's me.

I really like your Arnott pick. The last time Nashville was in the post-season, he was deadly against the Wings before being taken out by his own teammates after scoring a goal and being dealt a concussion.

Exactly. Over the last 3 playoffs, the stanley cup finalists usually have around 6 players in the top30 of playoff scoring. Conference finalists usually have 2-3 in the top 30. A couple hours looking at the playoff stats over the last 5 years show some pretty consistent trends.

So you're better off picking a top line players from a conference finalist than you are picking a lower line player from team that you think will be in the finals.

IMO it's best to do a 3-3(SC finalists) 2-2(conference finals losers) format if you can. That way you're not impacted as much from one upset. But you'll need to get 3/4 conference finalists right to have a realistic chance at winning.

So granted Det makes it to the conference finals, you should be all right. But you've already guaranteed yourself to be one player short in the second round.
