Why???

I woke up this morning still excited from our first road win and I was making my usual rounds through my hockey sites only to see that the ****in Tennessean has an article up about the preds staying until 2012. Really??????????????? The morning after our first playoff road win? Unbelievable. If it weren't for Glennon's updates, I would boycott that damn "paper"

It sadly shouldn't be that surprising.

They have to find a silver lining in the situation.

It's the Tennessean, don't buy the paper. They are dying and they know it.

This. Writing letters or 'boycotting' won't do a whole lot, but hit 'em where it hurts: Don't purchase their product.

It doesn't seem to be doing anything bad because the genuine interest in the Preds has been growing over the years.

You're exactly right. I wasted time in the past, now I don't even bother.

Here's something maybe someone out there knows...

When I click on the fishwrap to read glennon, are they getting "credit" just cause I clicked on there?

Also, do they still do Nielsen ratings on tv watching? Years ago, we filled out a little booklet for a month... But now with dvr's etc, does directtv know what i'm recording and do they use that for selling advertising, tracking, etc?

I'm assuming big brother knows all of the above, but didn't know if i was just paranoid..

The latest article by Rau is a lot of non-news. The team reached 14k paid attendance, so couldn't leave after this season if they wanted to. The team hasn't lost $20mil aggregate, so they can't leave.

The only noteworthy pieces of that piece is that the guaranty has been reworked so that the other owners are covering Freemans personal guaranty and that the next worth statements won't include shares of the team as they do now. Nice to see how much the non-hockey use of the arena has increased ... an over 62% uptick in money generated.

Thrashers fan here - don't sweat it, this kind of garbage in the press hangs around every small market hockey club. We've been reading threads almost exactly like this for years now. They can't get rid of all the southern teams.

Oh, and when they move us to Winnipeg, I'll become a Preds fan.

I can tell you about the Nielsen ratings--yes, they still do that. They also still do Arbitron ratings (radio). Now the Nielsen ratings also include when you watch at a different time, i.e. through Tivo or on the website or whatever. Arbitron includes satellite radio and online now.

As for whether the provider knows what you are watching and when, not sure about that. My guess is they have some way of gauging which stations are the most popular/profitable. They may not know that YOU are watching NHL Network, but they may know x number of customers in that area are watching NHL at a particular time.

It's funny, with the research I'm doing I'm finding the same level of historical disdain for the Preds as for the southern baseball leagues in the NY media of the 1880's.

What was their reasoning? Lack of population? Weather issues?

1) It was pure and simple ignorance. Sports writer's have a historical trait of lazyness. They only like to cover the local stuff simply because they are homers who only care about the local teams. To cover outside the area is hard work. You know how reporters were *****ing and whining about not being able to find versus? That was because they tend to "Cover" a lot of their sports by watching it on TV and listening to the local Play by play guys.

2) Let's face it, most of the articles I'm reading about are 20 years after the civil war. A lot of people died ad both sides were pretty bitter. Much like today with the southern teams being poorer, the baseball teams had less financing and population to feed that till. A lot of the stories are of northern baseball teams carpetbagging star players to feed their rosters.
