Tavares heading to WC's, Streit staying home

http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/darren_dreger/?id=318162

Per Dreger.

Quote:
Steven Stamkos and John Tavares headline Canada's roster for the upcoming World Hockey Championship in Germany.

Mark Messier and Canada's management team have as many as 15 confirmed players, with Stamkos and Tavares a clear indication that Hockey Canada has targeted a younger group for this year's tournament.

Quote:
"It was a long season with the Olympics too," Streit said during the Islanders break-up day Monday. "I've never played so many games and so many minutes. After a long season there are little injuries and stuff, so I'm just going to take this time to rest and recover."

Hard to blame Streit for that given the way he dealt with the monster minutes he played each night this season.

Streit finished fifth in the league in total ice time, averaging 25:41 per game.

after initially thinking JT should take this off and spend the summer re-focusing and building strength, stamina, etc - I'm very excited to see him go and compete in important games, with great (well, better) players.

Tavares and Stamkos would be very complimentary to one another playing on the same line - deadly almost!

I think you are correct on this. Given the overall higher level of talent that JT will be playing with at the WC's, I think he will be able to quiet a lot of the "we should have drafted Duchene" talk.

He still needs to add strength and improve his skating, but with the Canada lineup, he should show the offensive flair that made him the #1 overall last year.

Maybe Stamkos can give JT some pointers too. Wouldn't it be nice to see JT score 51 next year?

Even 31 would be fantastic. 51 would be unreal.

You do not turn down an opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf and play for Hockey Canada. This tournament is a gift for Tavares and I'm sure he will embrace it as such. It will be a tremendous experience for him and will compliment his off-season, not hinder it.

Should be a nourishing environment for JT, playing with more talent and getting different perspectives on the game.

Same for Gordon, Okposo and Hillen; as KO and Hillen (by the looks of the roster) will be playing prominent roles, and well, Gordon is the leading man.

Yup...should be good for the group here. I'd start to load up JT on calories and heavy lifting program the day the tournament is over though. Bailey and KO too. Want to see all three of them 10 lbs heavier with muscle (earned the hard way...if you know what I mean - lots of quality calories - protein, complex carbs and lots of heavy lifting).

THe older players i feel should not play in these things during the off season. this time for them should be to rest up and such.
However the younger guys say like 29 and under could gain some experience.

This is GREAT news, Tavares should be able to flourish with much better teammates to take his passes, and to set him up. It's going to really help his developement as well. very happy about this and the possible Petrov news.

The thing I wonder....if Tavares plays really well with quality teammates, will Wang or Snow think it's because of the quality players or the quality of the building they play in?

Sounds good. I'm also hoping he trains with a skating coach to supplement the strength training.

Great for Tavares to keep playing when he was just coming off a great stretch to end the year. Sometimes guys need this type of an environment to realize just how good they can be.

I'll be happy if Johnny T puts up 30 goals next year, but I see 35ish being his ceiling.

I guess Hillen is better than what I give him credit for. Gilroy made it too.
