IMO, no. Which is why I listed several alternatives.
Only way it would work, is if we 1 year lowballed Staal, got Volchenkov for four, and gave Kovalchuk a Hossa-esque frontloaded contract that would come out to 7 or 8 mil a year.
Great line! And Byers should be making this team. He'll provide much of what Prust can (and probably more with experience) on a different line. He's a faster skater than Prust and certainly Shelley.

I still think the Rangers are going to find out they need a veteran skilled center with some bulk. This year, I would rather see them address that need in the beginning of the season, rather than toward the end while trying to chase a playoff seed.
2 years ago: Team got better when Antropov was added. Made it into the playoffs. Dubi, Avery, and Antropov looked like a promising line.
This past year: Team got better with the additions of Jokinen and the creation of that 4th line. The Jokinen, P.A.P, Prospal line gave the Rangers a solid and stable 2nd line. I still think Jokinen can score goals. I know I'm in the minority here and I wouldn't sign him to a long term contract worth 5 million. But why not 3 years/3 - 3.5 mil per. Take it or leave it?
To me he's still a scoring center man and I'd like to see him on a line with Avery and Prospal. Both can pass him the puck. Most people probably don't think he can go back to scoring 30+ goals a season like he did in Fla. but I think he could. His stats were certainly not bad in Phoenix and as far as playing in Calgary, the Sutter's are looking to build a big gritty North American type of team with big bodies and lots of checking.
My first line would be Christiansen, Dubinsky, and Gaborik. And than follow that up with Jokinen, Avery and Prospal.
I think that gives the team 3 solid scoring lines (if you include the Anisimov, Shelley and Prust line) and then u have guys like Callahan, Dru, Boyle, Byers, etc.... rounding out a decent 3rd line.
Especially with Dubinsky on the wing, I just think the Rangers need more skill and experience up the middle. imo. It really has shown the past 2 season's. The problem is, they address the need too late.
Prospal-Anisimov-Gaborik (I'm disappointed that we didn't try this this past year. Anisimov is a great fit with Gaborik and Prospal might be the best playmaker on this team)
Grachev-Dubinsky-MZ Aasen (Grachev and Dubinsky are a match that could be very effective. I just think they compliment each other so well. I also think Dubinsky may be the only center that meshes well with MZ)
Christensen-Drury-Callahan (Christensen won't be as effective on the third line. Drury will probably regress more. Callahan will be stuck on the third line.)

McDonagh is very solid in his own end, hopefully that prevents him from making the stereotypical rookie mistakes. Hopefully he can remain reliable at the NHL level and cover up any mistakes that a rookie offensive defenseman like Bobby Sanguinetti will probably be prone to making.)
Ranger fans always talk about implementing the youth... well then stepan and sanguinetti should both make the team

the rangers need to acquire a playmaking centreman and a legitimate 3rd line right winger ...
it would help if we drafted mikael granlund with our 10th overall pick in the upcoming draft.. he might take a while to become a top player at the nhl level ... but there is no such thing as a quick fix
finally they need to disperse of these horrible contracts ... drury, roszival and redden equal approximately 20 million dollars ... we would be able to offer sheet bobby ryan with that excess cap

If the two played together in Minnesota, it would not be a bad idea. Gaborik scored 42g in 77gp and 30g (with 57pts) in 48gp while they both played there together.

Torts doesn't want Dubinsky being a center and Christ will stay a center. So maybe Grachev on the third line and Dubinsky on the 2nd while Drury centers the third line and Christ the 2nd.

And that's a good point... I'm also really unsure of how much Saku Koivu will be willing to take. I'm hoping in the area of $2.0-$2.5, but he's probably going to want $3. As for beating out San Jose for Pavelski, that's going to most likely be challenging and expensive, because I think SJ can afford it.
Names I really want here are Plekanec, Backstrom, and Bobby Ryan, but Backstrom/Ryan are pipe dreams and Plekanec is going to ask for too much.

Doesn't look horrendous, but it's a bit wishful and unrealistic. Pavelski will be difficult to get, and probably at a higher price than $2.6M. Koivu will probably ask for $3M. I'm going to actually do some big research tomorrow and see if I can figure out a solution to the severe problems this team is facing atm. I worked hard on this lineup, and it still doesn't seem possible... This team seems doomed for at least until Drury is gone.

2) Extend our own RFA's when their ELC's expire?
3) Have legit secondary scoring with him eating up all that cap space?
I wanted Kovalchuk for a little while too, but this is how I got over it. We have a great potential core of our team. We have some very talented centers (Stepan, Anisimov, Dubinsky, Christensen, and hopefully Johansen or Burmistrov), great RW's (Gaborik, Callahan, MZ Aasen, Prust), huge potential LW's (Kreider, Grachev, and hopefully Kabanov) and you know about all of our defensive depth.
When their contracts expire, how do you see one feasible way with even keeping most of them while having 10M+ tied up in a one dimensional player in Kovalchuk?
We simply cannot keep together the majority of our core with Kovalchuk eating up all that cap space.

Hmmm. If we can sign Saku Koivu to $2M and put him on the 2nd line... We sign Plekanec to $5M... Replace Gilroy (which I don't want to do) with Sangs to clear another $1M off the cap. Get Volchenkov for $4M instead of $4.2M, and Girardi $2.3M instead of $2.5M

Would still leave a small amount of space left, but I'm not so sure we can get Koivu for $2M. I can see Volchenkov for $4M, maybe, because I think people here overvalue him. Brooks Orpik plays almost as good defense, provides a bigger body for better hits, all while putting up better numbers than Volchenkov, and he's being paid $3.75M right now.
I don't know, though. Tomorrow I will commit to wasting my life on obsessively seeing what the Rangers can do.

I'll disagree with you on two points though. Full disclosure, I'm totally against signing Kovalchuk.
Kovalchuk is workable if he signs for less than $8,000,000. But he won't. So it doesn't work. But if he did, we would have two pretty legit scoring lines.
Kovalchuk is not one-dimensional. His defensive play has been pretty good this year.
The rest is very true. I think we should stay the course. In two years, Drury and Rozsival are gone. Our main prospects will be ready to come up. The future is very promising. Let's not screw it up with one impatient offseason.
