@kausatoday

Selke nominees are Pavel Datsyuk, Ryan Kesler and Jordan Staal. No surprises in these picks.
This is Kevin Allen's twitter, of USA Today.

ESPN has picked up the story now also.

So, Richards snubbed?

anyone agree or disagree with these picks?

I donno, i'm kind of on the fence. Staal did have the higher +/- on his team at 19 (49 pt season)...still. I have a feeling a lot of Flyer fans are going to be calling bloody murder.

I'm ok with it, he didn't exactly have a year worth bragging about. Solid, but probably not top of the league solid (even for 2-way play)

Didn't have his shorthanded goals this year so that's why he wasn't nominated.

Jordan Staal is quickly becoming the most overrated player in the NHL.

agreed

Mike Richards is a slightly less physical version of him, but with 13 more points (after a down year for Mike)

Jordan matched his total last year, with 49. In perspective, that's only slightly better then Hartnell.

Sucks.... but I wont complain. I think Gagne might have even been better than Richards defensively, especially towards the latter half of the season.

I think Staal and Richards are in a group of four players that are all very close: Toews, Bergeron, Staal, Richards. IMO. Any of these guys could have been nominated for the third spot, but probably none of them would have beaten out Datsyuk or Kesler.

Not when he's putting up a 2.16 GAON/60 against 0.042 Quality Competition.

Mike Richards has a case to be made with a 2.34 v. a ridiculous 0.109 Quality Comp., but if you think Staal getting Selke consideration is "overrating" him, think again. He's one of the best checking centers in the game today, and only going to get better.

I'm not surprised. Richards, by his standards, had a down year. And, as HC mentioned, only 1 SHG as opposed to his 7 last year.
He probably ended up 5th or 6th.

I hope Kesler wins it.

And who cares, he's gonna win the Conn Smythe anyway.

Nah. Those guys deserve it. I'd give it to Kesler or Staal. You could put Richards in there I guess, but he wouldn't win it this year.

Defensively I consider Richards, J. Staal, Bergeron, Toews, and Kesler all similar. It's not close enough when look at what Richards and Kesler do for their team in other aspects (i.e. production resulting in defensive plays/defensive awareness, killing penalties, forechecking to keep the play tied up in the offensive zone, getting pucks deep). Those may be "offensive stats" in a sense, but this award is more what you do without the puck; the player's entire defensive game.

Another thing to point out is that this award is largely a "stat" award when it shouldn't be. Richards was the clear winner based on stats last year and got the most first place votes.

In that light I see Richards and Kesler a step above Toews, Bergeron, and J. Staal.

Dastyuk is not far and away better than any of them, but he is a different style defensively, which benefits him quite a bit in terms of voting. I still believe Richards was snubbed of the award last year.

Richards did have a down year. I didn't expect him to get nominated, but Jordan Staal DOES NOT deserve to be on this list.

No, and to save myself from the hate ill just say, he wasnt on his A game all year, no need to be nominated for anything. Maybe Conn Smythe if he keeps this play up and go that far.

This was arguably Richards best defensive season as a Flyer. He played a ridiculously hard regular shift against the opposition, and had a revolving door of problems as his wings for most of the season.

That being said:

1) You would have to be watching the Flyers on a regular basis to appreciate that.

2) You would have to be interested in looking past superficial statistics.

Neither of which are the case with the majority of voters for these awards.

Don't be ridiculous....

Carcillo's got it in the bag

(imagine Bettman handing the Conn Smythe off to Dan Carcillo? uncomfortable/ironic moment of the season)

I called this two weeks ago. I said that unless he went on a tear in the last couple games and scored a bunch of shorties, he wasn't going to get consideration. For as awesome as he is, the voters like the flashy stats, and he didn't have it to back him up this year.

2007-8: Datsyuk had a 1.84 GAON/60 v. 0.087 Qual Comp to go with a 4.04 GFON/60
2008-9: 2.30 GAON/60 v. 0.038 Qual Comp to go with a 4.28 GFON/60
This year: 2.06 GAON/60 v. 0.036 Qual Comp to go with a 2.75 GFON/60

2008-9 for Richards: 2.32 GAON/60 v. 0.041 Qual Comp to go with 2.55 GFON/60

Now, these are even strength statistics... but Datsyuk was easily the correct choice over Richards when factoring in offensive output. Only reason Richards got votes was because of his run of shorties.

This year, it's much more up for grabs.

no snub this year for Richards. I have no problem with the finalist this year.

I'd say Richie is just outside the top-3, he's easily in the top-5 but I don't have a problem with the 3 guys nominated.

Toews or Zajac should of gotten a nod over Staal. I don't think he really got subbed. He was good this year defensively, but this is an off season for him.

He wasn't snubbed this year. Definitely last year though.

I didn't follow the Red Wings much this year, but didn't Datsyuk have an off year? He probably just gets an automatic nomination.

Didn't expect him to be nominated so I don't think he was snubbed. He wasn't terrible or anything this year, but his +/- took a real hit because the line could only produce on the PP anymore. Since the Booth hit he has also played a whole lot less physical and due to the acquisition of Betts and Laperriere his PK time has also significantly decreased. Plus he had a down year scoring-wise.

Yeah, it was not really a great year for Richie. However, he's making up for it in the playoffs so far and I hope he continues to do so.

Anyway, he definitely should have gotten the Selke last year and it's still a crying shame that the player who got the most 1st place votes did not get it!

Even if he got the nomination, he wouldn't win the award. He just didn't have as strong a season this year.
