USB ports

1 seems to work constantly, while the others work and then stop working. It's annoying to have 4 USB ports and only have 2, sometimes only 1 work. What could be the cause of this ?

Faulty I/O on the motherboard. It seems pretty common too, my own rig (as well as my last workstation) each have at least one or two bad usb ports.

Is it in the front ports (on the case) or the rear ports on the motherboard.

It sounds like it could also be a power supply issue. Not sure thought.

If it's the front ports you're having trouble with, try checking their connection to the mobo. Sometimes those cables can come loose pretty easy.

I'm going to second everything that's already been said. If it's a port on the case, the connection to the motherboard could be bad. If the power supply is struggling, the ports could go down. But... the motherboard could be faulty too.

I'm just glad I have more ports than I know what to do with... I think I've got 13 of the buggers on my rig.

desktop or laptop? I've run into issues with laptops, particularly in docking stations.

Like everybody said, probably the mobo. But to add something to the conversation, if it's the front ports, your mobo may only be able to handle one USB port up front. I built my computer with the help of a friend and my case has 2 ports, but my mobo only supports one of those ports on front. It's kind of inconvenient but I really don't mind since I never need more than one thing connected up front at a time anyway. Also helps that the back has like 8 USB ports to keep everything I need connected.

Lappy. I have two ports on the right side and two on the left. The ones on the left are side by side, the ones on the right are one on top of the other.

I have a USB mouse and sometimes have my ipod touch plugged in and then the odd time, plug my scanner/printer in. Normally it's just my mouse+ 1 of the other two.
