Just got off the phone with Paul Holmgren and he’s awaiting word on whether veteran right wing Ian Laperriere will need surgery to repair the damage done to his right eye last night.
“There’s a chance he’ll need to have something done,” Holmgren told me.
Laperriere blocked a shot by Paul Martin early in the third period and there is a possible fracture of his orbital bone, above his right eye. If there is a break in the orbital bone, Laperriere could need to have a plate inserted to provide stability.
Laperriere needed between 60 and 70 stitches to close the cut he sustained above his right eyebrow. He has vowed to wear a shield when he returns and for the remainder of his career.
In other injury news, Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne had successful surgeries and the time frames for their returns remain unchanged, according to Holmgren.
Gagne will have an MRI in two weeks to determine how his right foot is healing and could be cleared to play three weeks from today. Holmgren said Carter appears to be done for the season.
If the Capitals close out their series against the Canadiens tonight the Flyers will meet the top-seeded Caps in Round 2, beginning next week in Washington.
Asked his thoughts of playing Washington, Holmgren replied, “Today I’m just happy to still be in it.”

That isn't something you necessarily can play through. If there is a stress fracture, another hit could drive the bone into the brain or eye and really ruin your ****ing day.
He actually said this in one of his interviews. He said he'll still fight, he'll just try to take it off....
I think CSC was referring to another poster advocating Laperriere playing with a full cage instead of just the half-shield.

...yyyeah, orbital bones are nothing to **** with. If it isn't driven into his head that whole side of his face could basically sag because of muscle problems. My brother had this happen to him a few years ago on Thanksgiving, it was real creepy.

There's a better chance of Gagne returning than Carter but it is pure speculation at this point. The original sentiment was about three weeks for Gagne (from April 21) and six for Carter but that isn't a certainty.
This. Lappy won't be the same player he currently is; he can't fight, and throwing hard checks may not come so easily. and god forbid something were to dislocate the fracture.
