Ortmeyer named Masterton finalist

So much for the suspense of being announced on NHL Live.

Congrats, Jed.

It's a toss up I think between Jed and Jose. That's a tough call.

Uh, imo, it's not a contest.

Jed takes a very serious risk of death every time he takes the ice. If that isn't dedication to hockey, I don't know what is.

Imagine if Jed took a puck to the face like Laparriere did, he'd probably bleed to death. Hell he could die without even taking the ice just for playing Russian roulette with his medication so that he can play.

He still drives the net without fear, throws the hits, and blocks shots. The man is fearless.

It shouldn't be a contest, but east coast bias will mean "three or more" will win it.

there's a nice article for anyone who isn't aware of ortmeyer's situation:

good for Ortmeyer, he has played well this year and deserves it...don't know if he will win, but he deserves it.

At some point each day, Ortmeyer must use a needle to inject a blood thinner directly into his stomach to combat a hereditary blood-clotting disorder that has threatened not only his hockey career but also his life.
ouch!

Jed should win since he still plays with a chronic illness.

Yeah that pretty much is the definition of Dedication to hockey. He has even dropped the gloves a few times too and he can actually play hockey.

Pollak blogs on finalists.

Consensus from tweets is that it's between Ortmeyer and Theodore.

can't really be a homer on something like this...losing a kid is pretty brutal.

i dont see how he doesnt win it, i was just debating this on another forum, between him and Theodore. Its hard to Justify why one is worse then the other in terms of Theodores child dying or Ortmeyers condition. But Ortmeyer plays game in game out with this problem that could kill him, and Theodores is more a mental mourning. I hope i worded this right.....

Dedication to hockey, alot of people retire with medical conditions as opposed to losing family members... It's not really an award that you root for someone to win given the circumstances.

Jed won't win this award. "Won't someone think of the children?" mindset will get Jose the award.

Not that I'm saying what happened to him wasn't unimaginably tragic but Jed's condition more relevant is to his hockey career. I don't think many athletes have retired after their loved ones (including children) died.
