Yep the NHL needs to be careful, long term damage from acquiring the perception of bias refs will take years to undue and is not worth whatever short term TV ratings boosts you get from having favoured teams advance. Look at the NBA, remember a few years ago when all kinds of series went game 7s with tons of suspicious calls being made in games that evened series up? People still think of NBA refs as corrupt.

When you read stuff like this it's pretty hard not to think of them as corrupt. It also makes you wonder if this stuff happens solely in the NBA.

My issue isn't so much the penalty calls, or lack thereof.

It's why the hell are we getting kicked out of the face-off circle at like a 10:1 ratio?

I'm not a referee so I don't know what it is exactly that is causing this, but I've never seen so many fake-out puck drops where we jump a bit, then they kick us out.

I understand the whole square-up, stick down first for visitors, etc rules. It's just I don't see what's causing the ref to fake-out so much and kick a player out....

After reading this, you can't help but think it's possible it's also happening in the NHL. Especially considering how Bettman was involved with the NBA during those years were the refs were fixing games. Is it such a huge stretch to think it could have carried on to the NHL ?

If you believe that the NHL has a vested interest in a Caps/Pens East Final and are manipulating the outcome of games to achieve that... That is called a conspiracy.

If you think that the refs decided to just screw the Habs all on their own, then you are correct, that is not a conspiracy. It's just so insane as to be moronic. "Let's risk my career so I can see the Caps win!"

Moronic.

The reffing the other night was pretty bad all over. The diving calls hit the Habs worse, but there was plenty of equal opportunity bad reffing.

No conspiracy and no bias. Just a hockey game.

The Bettman Conspiracy for tonight's game

I'm sorry to be putting a potential negative feeling for tonight's game, but the way the officiating has gone in this series, I have a feeling that Bettman has been in contact with the Officiating office and has told them to make the close calls against the habs, the NHL can't afford to have Ovechkin out of the playoffs in the first round, this is my feeling only, nothing has been posted in any website or paper, just want to know if anyone else is feeling this way. To me, this officiating smells like Bettman and I hope I'm wrong

Also Hab nation brings more TV ratings and revenues than Crosby AND Ovechkin combined.

No conspiracy. However, we don't fit the NHL's marketing narrative. I think everyone's aware of that. Refs included. I just hope they can stay impartial tonight. That the better team is the one that wins...

ya i was gonna add that i didn't see the yotes game 7 so i couldn't say if maybe he did try.

well detroit still won. we can still win. as long as they're not clearly handing them calls. but if they're only "bad" and not "terrible", we can hold it.

in that post in the GDT, the 2 refs that have tonight's game have had balanced calls on both sides in the games they've officiated these playoffs, i hope that continues, even if one reffed game 2.

You guys are grasping at anything to make excuses for this team. Having any Canadian team, especially Montreal, is a huge money grab for the NHL.

The officiating sucks, because it has all year, it hasn't just sprung up out of the blue.

I hope for the stores on St-Catherine that the officiating will be neutral tonight

This. Or the team with the better goaltending at least. Those 3 diving penalties called on the Habs made my paranoia rise too. 3 in one playoff game? C'mon. You're trying too hard there.
